I think I forget how unnerving it is when people start baking their own bread so have been surprised at the number of questions from the people who received the starter. One suggested we could have a village group - I might suggest a WhatsApp group. DH baked his best loaf yet yesterday. He gave it time to prove all day and it certainly benefitted from the longer prove. It would be fun to share as everyone grows their experience.Save £12k in 2025 #2 I am at £4863.32 out of £6000 after May (81.05%)

You have inspired me to look into gluten free sourdough. I could make the starter with buckwheat flour which I have but struggling to find any where that has bread flour in stock.Save £10,500 - £2673.77 - 25.5%

We have been baking our own bread for years. We have talked about making a sourdough starter in the past but have yet to progress beyond the idea.
I love the idea of a local sourdough Whatsapp group, a great way to share successes, failures, hints and tips. A great way for the community to get together virtually.

A group sounds like a really good idea! I had a sourdough starter for a while (then went on holiday and it died). It was ok, but I'm too lazy for it really... I can't remember whether it was okay, but I don't really like the sourdoughyness flavour of the stuff you can buy. However, with the lack of yeast available to buy it might be necessary to get another starter going at some point!Mortgage free 16/06/2023! £132,500 cleared in 11 years, 3 months and 7 days

We used apple peel to start it off, no natural yeasts were there to give it a little lift. To be honest I am really lazy with our sourdough and add a couple of spoonfuls as a preservative and for a bit of flavour to a standard white loafSave £12k in 2025 #2 I am at £4863.32 out of £6000 after May (81.05%)
