There are about 15 snapped teeth on the large front gear ring. Halfords say when that gets replaced you should also fit a new chain. Then said that a new chain means you need to swap the rear cassette. Not a maintenance issue as far as I can tell. Gets cleaned and oiled most weekends.

My hope is that Boardmans will assist. I don't hold much hope with Halfords.

Blimey, I've never lost a single tooth in over 50 years of cycling. Did they all go at once? If not you should have stopped using it as soon as you lost the first one as that would cause extreme wear to the chain which will have a knock on effect to the rear sprockets.

The main cause of wear to the drive chain is dirt and grit embedded in chain (which the oil helps keep in place) You can get away with not changing the rear sprockets providing you replace the chain before it gets too warn. I change mine roughly every 6 months or earlier if it becomes stretched near to 0.75%, and change the rear cassette every second chain change.

Without the damage to your big front ring your chain was overdue a change and the rear sprockets would almost certainly need changing as well, however the front ring should not be showing anything other than slight wear and certainly should not have lost any teeth. The only reasons I can think of is impact damage or an inherent fault in the casting.

So I think Halfords owe you a new ring but the rear cassette and chain are due for a change anyway.

Missing teeth on a chainring can usually only be down to a major manufacturing defect, unlikely as a one off, or misuse / abuse / accident damage. Lack of maintenance usually shows up as sharkfins unless it has been ridden so hard that they have got so thin and snapped off.
  • Are you absolutly sure that they gave snapped off rather than just worn down? Ive never seen a chainring lose teeth at that level, however it's not uncommon to see them wear down.

Roughly how many miles have you used the bike for? As already suggested, if they have worn, that can be due to incorrect maintenance leading to premature wear and tear. Can you by any chance upload a photo,

This would be unheard of. I ride a lot and have never had a tooth snap.

I'd generally expect a chain to last 2-3000km, a cassette to last 3 chains and chainset to last 3 cassettes.

So would expect a chainset to last 18-27000km. And even then, just expect very obvious wear, rather than teeth snapped.

They are snapped half way down and quite random around the circumference. The good ones look perfect. After about 1500 miles this is why I think it is a meterial or manufacturing defect. About 1200 of the miles tracked on Strava, the rest are from short rides I don't bother tracking. My biggest annoyance is that Halfords have not at any stage given me any information on their warranty policy until I tried to claim. Then just told me that was their policy of no moving parts being covered. Don't know how they get away with it. So I hope Boardmans will honour the promise in the owner manual I received with the bike.

Are you sure they are broken, some large chain rings have a number of lower profile teeth that enable smoother shifting.

Could you telll us the make and model of the chain set, or failing that upload a photo?

FSA Gossamer. I'll try and get a picture in the morning. The technician in Halfords said they had snapped. I don't understand the term shark fin, or how a snapped tooth would look different to a worn tooth so hopefully a good close picture can help confirm the description of the fault. Thanks all who have tried to help so far.

If you zoom in on the picture here: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/fsa-gossamer-bb386-pro-n-10-11-crankset/rp-prod152016?gs=1&gclid=Cj0KEQiAwrbEBRDqxqzMsrTGmogBEiQAeSE6ZVkwkD4uGBzXkHqsJeT-e_QOnRh_t_NYUg42WIJUUF4aAtkb8P8HAQ&gclsrc=aw.ds

You'll see a number of teeth at about 4 o'clock, that on the face of it look worn/broken, (could be lighting of the image though). Is this like yours?
