Halfords bicycle warranty

My 10 month old bike from Halfords needs repair for 3 parts. The Boardman owners manual I had with the bike says all component guaranteed for 1 year. Halfords tell me all moving parts are excluded, which is almost every component in a bike. Can they do this?

  • Why not contact the manufacturer by e-mail and ask them:
    warranty@boardmanbikes.com
and once you get it in writing, go back to Halfords along with a copy of the e-mail and then see what they say.

Thanks. Mail already on the way to Boardmans. I have checked all my paperwork from Halfords and there is no mention of their bike warranty policy, plus I can't find any details on their web site. So they are over riding my written policy statement with a verbal "this is Halfords policy". Doesn't seem right after paying £900 for a bike.

A warranty is over and above you're statutory rights and as it's a Boardmans warranty then this is nothing to do with Halfords and you should take it up with Boardmans.

If you want Halfords to deal with it then you need to get an engineers report to state the components failed due to a manufacturing defect.

This may be hard to do as a bike, even a £900 bike can be put through some serious hardships if you cycle in a serious way. Hence the reason the warranty states normal wear and tear is excluded.

So unfortunately you need to prove you're case before Halfords need to do anything.

The warranty documentation does state that you should go via the retailer when claiming and as Halfords haven't actually stated that they don't have anything to do with it, it may well just be a case of the Halford's employee not knowing how the Boardman warranty is processed.

Thanks. I am in my mid fifties, have only just taken up cycling (this was my first real bike) and weigh just over 11st, so the bike hasn't been used too hard. Only ever ridden on the road.
  • What exactly in detail is wrong with the bike?

Many things can go wrong with a bike, just like they can a car, without regular checks and maintenance. Just because the bike cost £900 doesn't mean that it would therefore be exempt from these checks, it just means that the parts used on the bike are lighter/stronger etc and made to a better standard.

Many failures on a bike are due to a lack of maintenance which if done correctly would have highlighted these issues before they became failures, if indeed this is what has happened in your case.

Of course, some things do genuinely break within a warranty period and should therefore be investigated and replaced, but without further details its very difficult to advise.

I like the way they brand Boardman and use non Redditch phone numbers, anyone would think it is not just another Halfords brand :p

The frame warranty will be different to the general warranty and as long as you are dealing with a Boardman stocking branch they should know how to deal with it.

Ah so Boardman and Halfords are one and the same. In that case I don't see anywhere in the warranty that excludes moving parts.

You should take it back again warranty in hand and escalate it to the manager. remind him/her that the warranty is in fact a Halfords warranty and ask them to point out to you the term that states moving parts are excluded.

They can still ask you to prove it's not down to wear and tear or misuse but at least you catch them out on their warranty issue.

Boardman bikes are exclusive to Halfords, but for the price you pay they are very good value.

The thing about bikes is that every moving part is exposed to the elements, so regular maintenance is required. With the winter we have had so far I would expect your bike to at least require a replacement chain by now and the rear mech and breaks almost certainly require some attention.

My advice would be to take some basic bike maintenance lessons, and do all your own servicing and maintenance.
