Do you have an answerphone option on your landline phone? If the call is getting passed to that it'll be connected so you'll be charged.
No, and I have rechecked everyone's kind suggestions:beer:

So much utter nonsense in this thread, I felt the need to comment.
If the destination number is diverted elsewhere, like to the owner's mobile, then that may be why your call is counted as being answered. You think the landline is busy, but the mobile is busy.

    Wrong.
Agreed. However it IS true you can be charged for ringing and engaged tones when calling cross-network. Any connection charge is billed when the originating network hands the call on to the recipient's network. Once it goes through the gateway, the cost is billed - even if the caller eventually gets a busy tone

    Wrong.
If the "Ringing" is more than 1 Minuit, it counts as a "Call" even if unanswered.

    Wrong.

If Virgin are actually charging 8p for unanswered calls then it is either a glitch in their billing system or they are being extremely sneaky and underhanded.

Way back in the 90's there was a period where cross network calls to mobiles were billed even when unanswered, unreachable, etc. This was allowed by Oftel (now Ofcom) at the time as a way for the mobile networks to raise revenue to fund expansion. This does NOT happen now.

I have worked in telecoms for 20 years, mostly in billing as it happens.

Thanks Dave, I totally agree with you! I also did some test calls on my Sons mobile (three PAYG) & these were not charged for.
I think its a billing fault but they wont accept it. If its "New Policy" as they keep telling me it's disgusting!!
