Would you say the same if someone damaged your car and didn't tell you or how about if they smashed a window of your house? After all, it's only a pile of bricks and mortar and not worth worrying about is it?0 -

I've driven cars i dont care about too, however that never stopped me respecting other peoples and taking care around them.
Maybe when you've had someone do several hundred pounds worth of damage to your car and drive off, you wont take such a liberal stance.0 -

Once her mother had explained the situation, she did the right thing.
She didnt do "the right thing". She only rang the insurance company in the first instance because she thought it was a scam, then had to go back with her tail between her legs when her mother finally owned up, THEN said she couldnt see how the other car was damaged anyway because HERS wasnt.
Quite happy to condone what her mum did "because shes old" and taking no responsibility for the fact she should have ensured her mum had space to exit the car freely and / or needed help.
What a great moral learning experience that has been for her kids, eh?0 -

And are you saying that we should be condoning these behaviours?
Presumably in your view, as this is a money saving site the mother should be applauded as she was just trying to save her daughter money by saying nothing?0 -
8elarus, I'll hold back on any judgement, but I just need you to think of one question - what have you done to prevent this (your mother whacking another car, not just getting caught) happening next time?0

eh... we all make mistakes, sometimes it's just much easier to just ignore it and move on. A while ago I opened my door far too fast (I was in a rush) and it smashed into the brand new BMW parked next to me. The car looked awful and my door was fine. After checking there were no security cameras around, I thought it was easiest to drive away and park somewhere else.
So this seems like poetic justice then.

The chances of the other party not claiming from your policy in the circumstances you describe are very low.
You are absolutely correct as the responsibility for any damage falls to the passenger and not the driver.
There is no way a driver could been seen as negligent in parking in a car park and allowing an adult to open the door.
So the OP could have just ignored the whole thing and the other party would have had to claim on their own insurance or find out who caused the damage which would be tricky as there would be no requirement for the OP to provide that information.
Please note I am offering no moral position on whether the OP should do this or not so don't get all judgemental.0 -

And in doing so they fall foul of the road traffic act.0 -

And which section of the Road Traffic Act would that be.0
