Debt Advice

I wonder if someone could advise me..
About 14 years ago I took out a joint account with an ex boyfriend, we have now been split for about 13 years however today I received a letter in the post addressed to me and my ex.
To cut a long story short, the account was over the overdraft so I agreed with the bank to pay back half of the money (13 years ago) and they would contact my ex for the other half as this was a joint account.
The letter I've had in the post informing me that the debt has been sold to a debt agency and I need to pay back over £1,000, the letter is addressed to me and the ex. It seems that they obviously couldn't get any money out of him so have contacted me again.
My question is... After this many years can they really contact me for this money, I don't even know or speak to this other person, why should I be the one paying this off when I had already paid my half years ago. I've also heard about statue barred debt
Just to also confirm, a payment to this account hasn't been paid for about 11 years (when I agreed to pay my half) and I have never acknowledged the debt.
What can I do?

It sounds like you are still a joint account holder on this account.
As such you are jointly liable for all of the debt. The bank can chase you, OH or both.
How do you know no payments have been made? Do you log into internet banking regularly to view this account or have you received a statement for it?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Budgeting & Bank Accounts, Credit Cards, Credit File & Ratings and Energy boards. I made payments directly with the bank years ago when I made the agreement to pay back my half.
I do not get any statements or have any online log on. As far as I was aware the account was closed. In 10 years I have never received anything from the bank this is the first letter in years.0 -
Have you checked your CR to see if it is still being reported against your name?
You can do that via Clearscore or Noddle or preferably both.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Budgeting & Bank Accounts, Credit Cards, Credit File & Ratings and Energy boards. If neither of you has paid anything towards this debt for any period of six years or more, then it will be statute barred, and you won't have to pay it.
What you must do, if that is the case, is send them the statute barred letter.
