Improving my chances of getting my first credit card

Hi,

I'm looking to get my first credit card and want to improve my chances before applying (I was preapproved through the eligibility checker for a card previously but didn't go through with it and hoping to get a similar deal)

I am about to sign onto the electoral roll as I have heard that it improves the chances.

I have one worry which is that I have not updated my last address and current address with my bank (the current address my bank has is my parents and I have lived in 2 different addresses being my current address and one prior) Will this affect my chances for a preapproved card?

I have checked my credit score on noddle but they said they didn't have enough information to show me a report, even though I pay my rent, council tax and bills etc?

• Get on the ER (although that may take some months to update to the CRAs)
• Update your address.
• Try your bank for your first card.
• If that fails, try a subprime card.
• If that fails, leave it for 3 months.

Thanks for your quick reply. Would you recommend trying my bank over a preapproved card (100% chance) through the eligibility checker?

Yes. The eligibility checker can never be totally accurate. And in the absence of any other financial history, your own bank can at least see how you've been managing your finances in the past, and make a decision based on that.

I'm going to call my bank and see if they have any advice regarding the address issue and if I should wait before applying etc. Hopefully they will let me know if it is possible to apply with them and have a decent chance of approval.

Rent & council tax don't get reported to the CRAs yet, only some utility bills are so it would depend who you pay as to whether they report to them.

What addresses did you give Noddle?

I would think they stand a better chance of finding you via your parents address so if you used other addresses, maybe try again.
