Well, at least it gives wealthier people something to moan about, as to hear some of them they don't seem to appreciate that they can afford more.

I don’t know any well-off people who moan about what they pay in, but plenty will shake their heads in disbelief at the bleating from people who are subsidised from the day they are born until the day that they die.

U.K. society is heavily redistributive, and this is how it should be, those with the broadest shoulders support those less able to support themselves. It’s just a mystery as to why those who are net receivers seem able to convince themselves that they are being robbed along the way.

Because it's very expensive to be poor. Plenty of taxes are regressive, in the hurt low earners more (take council tax at £1-2k/year, that hurts someone on £20k more than someone on £200k). Stuff is cheaper in the long run if you can afford to buy it in bulk, or buy good stuff that lasts longer. The wealthy can afford accountants to minimize their tax liabilities, and it's easy to make excess money work for you when you have excess money.

So I can see how both sides feel hard done by.

Possibly, but that hasn't stopped widening inequality in our society. In addition the better off make far greater use of public services, from education to health, libraries, transport and so forth. There are some statistics I read, can't remember where, which show this and you could no doubt find if interested.

Like many I have some funds protected by ISA/PEPs from paying tax. I appreciate the incentive, but is it fair to treat capital with a lighter hand than PAYE? As for the really well off, they're on another planet of off-shore funds and it's worth their while having specialist accountants to protect their funds via various schemes. But there are very many who have no savings at all, and more importantly, have no chance of gaining them.

My point was made after you saying that the "wealthier.. are expected" etc. which looked like a complaint to me, and echoes what I've heard from some wealthier people. I'm afraid the only ones on benefits I know personally are pensioners and one or two disabled. I'd far rather be paying lots of tax than be one of the latter. Even if it's not a complaint I'd try and take pleasure in being so fortunate..

You mention entitlement, but again I've seen more of that at higher levels, possibly because of such people's wider access to the media. A very recent example being the crass obtuseness epitomised by the statement from the headmaster of Stowe school.

According to the IFS our household income puts us well into the top few percentage of UK households. However I don't pretend for one second to think we are some how 'better' or more 'deserving' of any thing in life compared to some people I meet everyday whom cannot even pay for the bus.

We got to where we are by a combination of luck, opportunities, and hard work. I would say the first two points had a much larger impact on my life course than the final point.

To assume people less well off are some how 'worse' than you is the very problem with society. The fact that I have access to the cheapest possible energy costs, able to access far cheaper financial products etc all just goes along with enlarging the gap between those who have and those who don't have in society.

EVs are not different, I probably pay as much to get from A to B as someone using the bus, the difference been I can do it at my own time, and therefore be much more productive. Not having EV charging at home is another example where if you have the resources you can access cheaper services at more convince.

But am not the one to decide how society is run, but some of the kindest people I have ever met are the people who have the least and often most hard done by the random events of life which are totally out of their control. I often how I would manage if dealt with the hand some people face, am not even sure I could manage in some situations.....

Not sure if this has been posted but there's a young girl that goes around and gives out thank you cards to owners of electric vehicles. Have a look on social media for EV thank you. It's a lovely gesture.
