  • Wow Grouchy you have a good memory! Yes it was me posting about Heinz Tomato Frito some time back. My luck has been in recently as we have a smallish shop here selling grocery/freezer/chilled items approaching sell-by dates. I managed to pick up quite a lot of Heinz Frito in there at 29p each and, despite the short date, stockpiled them! But I will remember the TTD Rustica Passata when I need some more.

I love Sainsburys frozen Glamorgan sausages. Their chilled veg lasagne is good, too.

We buy a Pizza Express margarita pizzas and load then with our own sliced courgettes, peppers etc.

Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.

  • I've only tried the Linda Mac sausages (which are a vote winner in this house of varied diets) and the mozzarella burgers which are blooming lovely - really meaty and filling. We actually have them as our Christmas dinner!! I'm not a big fan of anything that tries to be meat but these hit the spot. Also, our common denominator for meals in is vegan - a lot of Quorn products contain egg white or try too hard to be meat-like when they are not IYSWIM

Not a dish but a flavour - Have you tried liquid smoke? It really peps up stews and other dishes with a gorgeous smokey barbeque flavour - great for flavouring another nemesis of mine - Tofu:eek::eek:. Don't like but cook it anyway:rotfl::rotfl:

The Linda McCartney mozzarella burgers aren't vegan .

I really like these (from H+B)

but OH prefers Linda Ms (suits me...they're cheaper!) Keep meaning to order some vital wheat gluten and trying and make my own seitan sausages. If I successfully make anything yummy and cheap, I shall report back.

Well, have got a few things in to try out.

First off, tried the Linda McC Mozarella Burgers - very good indeed, so that is on my shopping list. I do find Linda McC products good, the ones I've tried. Also saw and picked up the Veggie Meatballs, so will try those and see.

Also bought the Cauliflower/Cheese cutlet things.

Regarding the 'sausage mix' options. Never tried this, but the only one I can find easily is the Granose Lincolnshire mix. Is this good as it is without adding to? Can you add to it? - I was thinking garlic and grated cheddar cheese for 'fat'/moisture effect and fresh herbs.

Good to have a few trusted store-bought items to have in store.

Thanks for suggestions. Will have a look into those VegiDeli sausages.

I am not at all fond of the granose Lincoln sausage mix. It was rather tasteless. I made scotch eggs with mine at Christmas, I ate one and threw two out. It was not very nice in a sausage roll even with bits added in.

I bought some vege sausage rolls from ocado, frozen ones they were very nice but they had wholegrain mustard in them which I enjoyed. I will see if I can find the brand.

Revitalising this thread as some new items to add as recommendations:
Richmond Meat-Free Sausages - excellent my new favourite veggie sausage.
M&S Plant Kitchen No Chicken Kiev - tasty!
Simon Howie - Veggie Square Sausage (a veggie take on Lorne sausage) perhaps only available in Scotland.  Also tasty!
Feel free to add as always looking for other things to try.

  • Meat free Wellington from Sainsburys (frozen isle) is nice and tasty. (think you need to like mushrooms though)
  • Cauldron Foods Marinated Tofu Pieces are very good and a much better texture than most tofu you can buy. Cauldron's vege sausages are okay and will do if you need a sausage shaped something to include in a recipe but otherwise I would avoid them. Cauldron's plain tofu is not a great experience either I find.
Personally I loathe the M&S Plant Kitchen range in its entirety but can recommend their small ready made salads especially the Rainbow Salad, Supergreen Salad and Mango and Mangetout Salad. All in the 2 for £3.50 deal.
For emergency meals when I'm exhausted I tend to default to fried egg on buttered toast with lashings of marmite and if feeling luxurious and greedy add in fried mushrooms and/or baked beans.
