  • My mum also received this letter on Friday. Does anyone know if this is just another scam? I presume so.

I also got one of these letters. It seems genuine but I'm still unsure about it.

They said the would contact all affected customers, which they appear to be doing.

Just verify that any addresses you’re sending things to or phone numbers you’re calling are genuine by checking them against their official website.

    I had a letter, too.

CIFAS say it's genuine and they would register me with them free.

My call to Equifax did not inspire confidence,,though. An Indian woman was both unintelligible and wrong, when she told me I had to register myself then Equifax would reimburse me.

I did attempt to register online fir their Equifax Protect, but had to ring to give 'further details.' They wanted copies of a recent utility bill and passport or driving licence!

No chance! I'm not providing sensitive detail to an incompetent group who has lost my details anyway!

Stroppy letter ready to go off today, to be signed for.

And I registered with CIFAS myself, as they're more trustworthy.

Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.

(Pity they are mangled by this autocorrect!)
  • :rotfl:I also received one of these letters last week. Like other customers I called and spoke to a person who I guess was in the Philippines, given his accent. I had to keep telling him we had a terrible line as it was more polite than telling him he had a terrible accent. I found it hard to understand a complete sentence. Nevertheless, I believe the letter is genuine and, since confirming that I wished to register for all available protection I have received emails enrolling me in Equifax Protect and Webdefend. I think they are a real shower and are doing just a little more than the minimum to say "sorry" for making such a cluster-wotsit of looking after our data; but at least I do not believe we are all being scammed by the party that stole the data in the first place...!! :rotfl::rotfl:

You can get all reports free now and monitor monthly, why provide info for one off report? They are also asking for info they don't have, passport info. So yes the people who lost your info are asking for more of your data to lose in future.

I have just received the letter from Equifax and, although I have no reason to believe it’s a scam, I don’t see the necessity of taking any action. I have checked my credit report on Experian, via the MSE Credit Club, and all seems to be OK.

Or am I missing something here?😳

Make sure you also sign up to Clearscore to see your Equifax Credit Report for free. Then sign up to Noddle to see your Callcredit Credit Report for free.

You will then have monthly access to the main three credit agencies data and if their are any issues you will know.
  • I have also had a letter today, called the number and like everyone else could hardly understand a word, I was told to log in with /protect but I haven't as like others I am not confident in giving any data for them to mess up.
Should I be signed up to all credit report accounts, is there something I am missing here?

If you want to check all 3 main agencies use...

    MSE Credit Club (for Experian)
    Clearscore (for Equifax)
    Noddle (for Call Credit)
