Is the bedrooms reasonable size. The reason I am asking is because I knew a family in a 2 bedroom Victorian terraced who managed to divide one bedroom into two and it wouldn't cost a arm and a leg. They had one boy and one girl both around 8 -10 at the time

Thats ok as long as they also make sure there is an escape route in case of fire. I've seen a few houses where people divide a bedroom with 1 window into two bedrooms so one room has no means of escape if there was a fire. When I mentioned it to two of the homeowners they really didn't care..

    Shocking really...
  • any council that would allow you on the housing list or give you a house shouldn't be a council imo! it's supposed to be there for people who can't afford a property, even a small one.

i suggest that you work very hard at fixing your credit file in the next few years and then consider if you can upgrade. it's possible, a lot of people on this very forum have worked hard to erase their debt and improve their credit file in a shorter amount of time than the calculations given to them.

  • be aware that as far as some councils are concerned, they define the lounge as a sleeping area.

I know of several families (existing council house tenants) who are on the transfer list for 3 bed properties. They don't have top priority because the council defines the lounge as a sleeping area thus the two bedrooms meet the age restrictions for the kids.

My near neighbour (and friend) has been on the list 6 years, under band B. Three bed houses are rare, in this town last year 5 came up. All bar one of them went to band A (priority ie homeless)...the remaining went to a band B, but they had been waiting a lot longer than my friend.

And finally, the old days of the council having a duty to provide you with accommodation are gone. At the most if they do have a duty to house you, they can discharge that duty by finding you a private rent with a years tenancy. And that private rent doesn't have to be in the same county let alone the same town!

My friends solution is to give the kids the bedrooms, and they have sectioned off the dining part of the lounge diner.

Oh my goodness....... not asking for others to bail us out!!
Merely asking what people would do in our situation, after ideas not negativity.
And if it was that simple to just go out and get a better paid job then we would have done that already and problem would be solved..... I'm sure we would all do it if it was so easy.
At least we both have a job! :T

The house is a terraced house, so no garage to play with. Downstairs we just have a lounge and kitchen no dining room.
It has 3 floors, so we also have no loft to play with.
Currently the kids are in the top room, our only option is to swap bedrooms and make 2 "areas" out of the other room.
The house was perfect when I first brought it as a single person with no kids 10 years ago lol.
    How things change.

When you're not on maternity leave ...

You've been told what others would do, they'd make the best of what they have. The children have the bedrooms and you sleep in the lounge.

    Ouch!!
At no point during my working years have I been without a job.
So I'm sure I can be allowed maternity leave without being judged.
  • Have you actually looked into renting privately or assume you wouldn't be accepted?
  • Blimey! Maternity leave is not the same as !!!!less unemployment!

The private renting thing is also one of my questions.... I'm not sure whether landlords will except people with poor credit or not. Do they need have both of us down on the agreement or can it just be hubby or not.
I'm fully prepared to sell my house, but it's kind of a chicken and egg situation, need the money that I pay on the mortgage towards rent, but can't sell house before we've found somewhere to rent.
