Thanks very much for the prompt response. However, neither of these codes worked. (The phone is locked to Virgin; I put a T-mobile SIM card and switched it on; a message "phone restricted" was displayed; I input the first code, which did not work; then I input the second code, which did not work either). I am not sure if the software version would be of any help; but it is as follows (obtained using *#0000#).

Nokia 6020, v 04.90, 09-05-06, RM-30, (c) Nokia. Language: V 04.90

if both codes dont work, you may have one of the newer 1600's that can only be unlocked by service equipment
