Cooking for one

In Mr T's yesterday I picked up a can of their cheap spag bol - annoyingly it's now 36p and no longer 20p. One tin does for two meals of spag bol on toast. Tastewise it needs a "splash of something" as it tastes identical to spaghetti in tomato sauce, but it does have the look of a spag bol as it's got some little brown bits in it ...
These tins are part of my "meal in a tin" range I like to keep in the cupboard...
If I can ever get as far as spag bol on toast, optional extras include some grated cheese, or a poached egg.
Dinner for 24p there... and filling.
Today though, I've got the pie, so can't have both .... I'll have to just have toast for one meal today because the pie's going to be enough.0 -
Bargain PN..but half a tin of beans etc just isn't enough for me..I need the whole tin. (Absolutely hate tinned spaghetti in tom sauce...horrible stuff _pale_ But each to their own
).
I just don't know what's happened here this week. I did a big shop last Saturday. Spent about £60 but that usually lasts 2/3 weeks....but I just don't seem to have much food left?
Yes I've got store cupboard pulses, lentils, rice, 2 tin of baked beans etc, some frozen veg, a couple of burgers, packet of cheese in the freezer ...but that's about it apart from last nights uncooked pizza.
Where's all my food gone? :undecided:think:'I'm sinking in the quicksand of my thought
And I ain't got the power anymore'0 -
Interesting posts re keeping cabbage and celery. I don't cut my cabbage and just take off a few leaves at a time, wrap in foil and keep in an outside meter cupboard. I find its can last two or three weeks like this.
Celery I keep in a vase with a bit of water on the windowsill where it grows roots and keep growing, providing I remember to top the water up that is, again this lasts for weeks.
Good tips. My mum always kept celery in a tumbler with water in the fridge, and had some kind of contraption (I assume from Lakeland or an equivalent) for lettuce, and exposed side of a cut pepper would be kept in shallow water. :T
My local fruit & veg shop will sell you half a cabbage, and even let you buy single stalks of celery. I realise that not everyone has a convenient and helpful fruit & veg shop, but if you have one nearby, and think you might struggle with fridge space, it's always worth a go.0 -
 hi everyone
had a day off cooking for one most of this weekend after a visit with a mate. She cooked an amazing meal on Friday (spicy mince with rice and asian slaw) which we accompanied with lots of wine and then we had lunch out yesterday (lasagne and salad
)
Back to it today so I have got out some sausages and bacon and am going to tackle this with some salad or mash depending on how hungry I am

Wow great greengrocer there, just to say I have discovered a better way to keep my cabbage, put in water to grow roots. I still have reduced cabbages from before Christmas kept like this.Slimming World at target0 -

Hmmmmmmm these look tasty, I have a pack of sausage that I just shoved I the freezer without portioning them so now have to cook the lot when defrosted. I think I will give this a go as would make nice cold snacks as well.Slimming World at target0 -

Steps back in envy. I don't think I've ever encountered that:(
Last bought celery (a whole darn thing of it) a couple of weeks back and only wanted 1 stalk. I've planted the rest in my garden - and am hoping it will start growing on a bit and I can get to eat the rest of it before it goes off by having done that.
The most I've encountered is I used to have a greengrocer shop that would slice up a large watermelon and sell it as individual slices. But - these days and T*sco and I land up having to buy a whole one and eat quite a bit of it in next few days and the rest goes into the freezer in chunks. It doesnt emerge anything like the same - but I just tell myself "At least I get to eat all of it - one way or another".:(0 -
I'm with Karcher 1/2 tin isn't enough and I loathe canned pasta the texture gives me the squirms _pale_
PN you could try a splash of balsmic in your spag bol
Hi Mohawk, wrapping in foil works as well and Meg72s tip of regrowing them is a keeper you're really lucky to have such an obliging green grocer nearby
Nelski - sounds as though you've had a lovely weekend these sausages look fabDid you know Tesco have 1L of Baileys on special at £12 until 14/02?
moneyistooshorttomention you'll need to let me know how the re-planting goes? Thanks
Well son has headed of back to "Geordie-land" so back to cooking for one. After having a think I have taken two chicken thighs out of the freezer and will have these with creamed cabbage and peas as I've a splosh of cream from last weekend needing used up and a sweet potato baked in with the chicken later so an easy meal and not too much washing up either. Decided against making the chorizio stew as I have various bags of meals already in the freezer so will use them up if I don't fancy cooking.0 -
