Cooking for one

.... spaghetti bolognese which is one of my homemade ready meals so I only have to cook spaghetti.
During my "random stroll round 4sda, see what they've got" outing last week, on one shelf I saw a jar with a label that said "bolognese sauce" ... and it was 39p (from memory) - and I thought it was a bit of a large jar for one, but at 39p it was worth a read - so I read the label "just add meat" it said. Just add meat? !!!!!!? So it's a tomato sauce jar then! That went back on the shelf.
4sda used to do a SmartPrice tin of spag bol for 20p, great on toast as a "quick/easy meal in a tin" ... half a can + 2 bits of toast is a meal. I used to always pick up a couple of cans of that twice a year. That's now no longer available if you look online... but I think in the store it's about 40p ... with the cheap own-brand cans being 60p (compared to Heinz at 87p/can, or 5 for £6 which is 60p)
The 4sda Smartpr1ce version was about 14p in 2011. Tesco do one at 36p/can too.

D&G :eek::eek::eek::rotfl::rotfl:
I think I might have broken my toeI've no idea how but I managed to catch my foot under the runner on my outside rocking chair then proceeded to tilt it forward with my full weight on it  . It all squashed looking but I'm hoping it's just badly bashed. Reckon either way I'm going tp have the most spectatular bruise tomorrow ..... I've got an ice pack on it and rubbed arnica but ouch....
I know you said you don't think it is broken but do be careful for a while. Ice it, keep it elevated etc. If you have a walking stick/crutch(es) use them to help you get around for a couple of days at least I'd say.
So coffee and water so far.
Planning on making a huge batch of buckwheat pancakes later, enough for 4-5 servings, will have those for lunch today and breakfast the next few days. That will use up my apples in the fruit bowl, the soya yogurt in the fridge I forgot about and is gone it's use by (it will be fine still) and use up the last of this bag of sprouted buckwheat flour.
I still have a portion of vegetable curry in the fridge, so that and rice for dinner. I honestly don't know how an extra portion emerged.
Tomorrow will be ratatouille and rice for dinner. 3 days ago I picked up 1kg of courgettes for 99p and 2 days ago an aubergine was picked up for 32p. Add a tin of tomatoes, a few onions from the fridge and some frozen peppers with the right herbs etc. Cheap, cheerful and healthy.I am a vegan woman. My OH is a lovely omni guy0 -

On a different note it's shocking how much food prices have gone up in the last couple of years :eek:0 -
There's a thought D & G - buckwheat pancakes.
Do you do the buckwheat flour from scratch - ie soak buckwheat/sprout it/grind it? Think that was how it read it got done and thought "On the list to try at some point".0 -

I bought it on offer I have to say, have 2 more boxes; one also bought on offer, the other reduced down due to broken packaging (the box only, the contents still in plastic). It's not cheap though, the reduced one was still £3 for the box.
I've read you can do it yourself, can't remember how but easy to find on the net, I'm just lazy with doing it. I have raw buckwheat groats in the cupboard that are open and need using too!
So many packets of different items open.I am a vegan woman. My OH is a lovely omni guy0 -
Good afternoon everyone,
Thanks for all the good wishes re my toe:A
I've had a very lazy morning after a fairly uncomfortable night with my toe aching. That said although it is swollen and bruised I'm fairly sure it's not broken as I can wiggle it. I'm not CFO tonight as my younger son is making a curry banquet for a crowd of us and I get to sit back and drink wine;) . I'm now the delighted owner of a dehydrator - I've wanted one for ages so looking forward to using it
Buckwheat pancakes - yes please I've not had these since the flour I brought back from a holiday in Brittainy was used up. It's so expensive here but I think I paid just over a Euro for a biggish bag.0 -

Happy birthday :bdaycake:
I'm glad that you toe isn't broken, that is good news.
Enjoy your meal tonight, it sounds like your son will do a good job. The dehydrator was a nice thoughful present for you, I'm sure you will enjoy using it.0 -
I had a change of breakfast this morning. I made an omelette, in part to use up a few bits and pieces hanging around in the fridge. I put some tomatoes, peppers and mushrooms in it. It was quite tasty.
Lunch has been a cheese and pickle sandwich with some salad.
Dinner will be a chicken breast with some steamed veg and new potatoes.
I will be having the usual snacks of crumpet, choc ice, and cake.
I am going out with shortly to the food festival being held this weekend in the park. I like to go and taste things I wouldn't normally get the opportunity to, although you tend to only get a very small piece of everything. I think it is unlikely that I will purchase anything though, most things there are usually expensive.0 -
Thanks Holly - hope you enjoy the food festival0

Afternoon all
This morning was a bit of a "meh morning" . Dull & windy with drizzly bits in the air. I was intending mowing the grass but the damp put me off, easily persuaded to not cut grass
It was a Morrie trip today, missed out Asda due to the pub car park I normally use is closed today for Armed Forces Day show, and although it is free parking in Asda I fancied a change
As it happens it was a good choice. A lot of local Morries fridges / chillers have broken down, overworked in the heat I guess. So loads of YS chilled food. But loads is not same as a lot of choice. Who wants tons of RM cauli cheese, or huge family sized trays of stewed meat thingy, large packs of of sausage rolls etc?
I just picked yet another ready meal Hunters' chicken, now I find I quite like it, especially on offer. That is this weekend's dinners sorted, plus frozen chips
Had a breakfast for a change, toast & ginger marmalade
Lunch the very last of the LO tinned salmon in a salady sarnie
The damp means I will have to pick the rest of the cherries or I suspect they will go mouldy on the tree if I leave them too long. Which reminds me about yoghurt, I looked in morries today for some to go with the cherries, years since I bought any, I only ever used the plain unsweetened runny type. It seems to have vanished, umpteen sorts except bog standard nothing but yoghurt in it yoghurt :mad:Numerus non sum0
