Cooking for one

  • Depends on what type of porridge it is I guess Holly....

But certainly with yer "proper" porridge oats - then you could just leave it soaking in its milk for some hours in the fridge and then add various fruits/nuts/etc to it and have it as "overnight oats". That way - it doesnt need cooking.

As for the birds in garden - I'm basically not that bothered - as they all seem to have worked out exactly where the strawberries are in my garden. I can see the little wotnames diving in amongst said strawberries right in front of me and they come and help themselves. But then I've got so many now that I just turn a blind eye to it and I think they've got that sussed by now...but I was still giving away yet more strawberries this morning and am trying to gear myself up to make some strawberry chia jam shortly.

It's very noticeable just how much more birdsong I hear in/near my garden since I moved in and they all realised my garden was no longer "barren" and is getting steadily less so:cool: - though I'd much rather not have seagulls and crows hanging around too. I like the little birds and wood pigeons though.

Couple of parcels due here - but both firms asked me for a "safe space" if I'm not in and I probably won't be then. More stuff for the garden....

Moneyistooshorttomention I was going to say about overnight oats too, great minds as they say.

Oo just looked up that chia jam, vegan and gluten free. Love this idea as it is soo much healthier.

Thanks for ice cream suggestions, I was torn, the Carte d'or is on offer in morries, but did not fancy the detour. They do sell Mackies in Waitrose, and Green & Blacks. In the end I got so umming & arring I bought Duchy organic

Seems to tick all my requirements, and enough for when my goosegogs ripen in about 3 weeks

Still muggy here but a bit cooler, the ice cream & fresh cherries will be most welcome later.

Birds are problem here at times, I like them but net the cherries, being muggy I expect the gulls will soon be circling waiting for the flying ants any day now. I think the sparrers have nipped of a lot of my bean flowers, or it could be they have dropped due to hot weather. Plus I have two pigeon silhouettes on large front window where they have flown into it. No bodies though.

Was it only me or did anyone else eat pigeon pie when young?

    Nil breakfast

Asda continues to be "where the heck is everything". No fresh fish or pizza counters, not that I ever used them so not missed by me. I did find the RFQS area, but nothing I fancied, loads of fresh chicks there but I already have some in freezer and do not need more in there

Lunch, the ubiquitous cheese salad sarnie

Dinner, not sure. I may have my bowl of fresh cherries & ice cream first than see how I feel. If still peckish maybe crumpet or omelette or some LO tinned salmon in yet another salady sarnie. That would at least use up the last two slices before I get another loaf tomorrow

I had my favourite choccies nagging at me - so went out for them....and discovered a new treat. Little pots of toffee dessert by Quality Street :)
You get four pots in a package, 70g each (so one heaped tablespoon really) .... £land, 4 for £1. Bought those. Two scoffed already.

Grabbed my favourite choccies and, standing in queue to pay, realised they are smaller than they've been for at least the last four years. Now £1/225g instead of £1 for "200g+25% free". Oh well, still well cheap/100g and worth it. I started on the bag in the car queueing to get out of the car park :)

EDIT: Tea ended up being a nice 4sda chilli/lime burger, in a big bread roll, with coleslaw, cheese and a dollop of hot chilli sauce. LOVED it. Just looked online for it and it's no longer available for sale... isn't that just typical!

    Good evening everyone,

Farway - pigeon pie, rabbit, various game birds and venison were all regulars when I was growing up. Not 'cos we were "posh" (far from it) but my great uncle was Head Ghillie on a large estate that was seldom used by the owners so there was frequently surplus that came our way. We used to get fed up venison at points as we didn't have a big freezer so it was used up:o.

Meat parcel arrived and currently in the fridge for me to portion. Venison wasn't quite what I expected and had previously been frozen which of course by the time it got to me meant it had defrosted. Have to say the company have been very good (so far) when I phoned them and I'm getting a call back from the Head Guy tomorrow (I didn't ask for this btw) as there might be a supplier issue they want to investigate. Thank goodness for the sous vide as I'll pop the venison in that so I can refreeze without commiting myself to what I'm going to do with it.

Pork chop, spuds, mushrooms and green beans all done in the griddle pan for dinner tonight :)

Nope I'm not I'm just really into cooking......;) Where as many other women like fashion, make up, smellies etc. I don't I'm happy with the basics to keep me clean, reasonably presentable and clothed:) so my family buy me kitchen stuff as pressies for birthdays etc. and the sous vide was a very special pressie for my 50th birthday from my boys. As a single parent I sold "my soul to the devil" so to speak to keep them on the straight and narrow and see them through uni - so "posh" no, appreciative of my kith and kin yep....;):)

Is a sous vide a water bath affair? They use them all the time on Great British Menu I think.

Yes it is they are used lots in restaurants - I have a smaller domestic one. Not something I would have ever bought myself but I do love it:)
