I had a child's meal in an Ikea once...it came on a tiny kiddie plate :)
That was fish/chips I think (about 10 years ago).

I've just got back from a Trolley Dolley to 4ldi. Just popped out for big baps and eggs - their big baps are BBE tomorrow, so I got pitta instead. Also got more sausages, tin of spuds, tin of tomatoes and the eggs I went in for. £3.28. Under 1 mile walked.... so that's about 4 chips' worth of calories.

What I SHOULD do now is make those pittas up with fillings... wrap those up and take a Trolley Dolley to somewhere where I can eat a picnic :)
  • I'd guess Ikea would be less likely to "have their own opinions" about what one should/shouldnt eat than many - well that's I would expect with a Swedish ethos.

Just been doing quick google re childrens menu at some of the "chains". Can't recall which one it was now that has "unlimited salad" as part of the child menu and I'm guessing they would object to an adult having a child meal - as there would be 3 different definitions of "unlimited salad" (ie what a child would eat/what I would eat/what a greedyguts of an adult would eat).

    [QUOTE *********

I shall keep my eye out on that in future re attitude to child portions - though I guess there is an element of "come back" one can have at any restaurants/etc with that sort of policy of "Oh well - hmmm....well I'll have an adult portion then and a doggybag to take away what I don't want now" said right at the start. If they refuse to even provide a doggybag - then just walk out....

Would be interested to know what other posters' have experienced re this...[/QUOTE]

Until recently because of ill health I was hardly eating anything and this had been going on for about two years. When I started to feel a little bit better (only a couple of months ago - about the time I started posting on here) I started to go out with my friends to restaurants/cafes again. I had not been out anywhere where eating food would be part of the outing because I couldn't eat it for at least the two years.

When I started being able to eat again I was advised by my GP and a dietician to eat small portions and slowly build up to normal sized portions. My friends were really good and they researched all of the pubs/restaurants we use, to see which ones did a child menu. Most did, sometimes only during the day though, and not the evening. When we phoned them, most of them would allow me to eat from this menu no questions asked. The two which didn't (one is a national chain of pub/restaurants) when it was explained that it was because of medical reasons did then agree to this. We have not had any problems. Most of the time now, I have an adult portion but sometimes if I have had larger portions for breakfast/lunch and perhaps some cake in the afternoon I still can't manage a full meal so eat from the child's menu.

EDIT: Don't know what happened to the quote.

    Hello everyone,

I have just got back from collecting 'trolley'. Of course I had to have a good walk around with it. I was about to trundle through the park in the hope that I could get used to walking with it with less danger of bumping into anyone and nearly got knocked over myself as a few hundred runners came up behind me :( I forgot that they do the 'park run' through this park every Saturday morning.

So I walked the 1.6 miles to Tesco and got a couple of bits in there. I didn't really need any shopping but really wanted to try it out.

I am glad that PN has posted about her experience with using a trolley because it made me mindful of kerbs and width. I didn't have any problems in Tesco, but I did notice that some people looked a bit warily at the me and the trolley (to be fair, I don't blame them :rotfl: )

Walking back even with a few tins in it, it didn't feel heavy at all. I think I am going to find it really helpful and useful. Now how would I manage this on a bus, I wonder!

    Good afternoon everyone,
My town is a popular destination for pensioner "days out" and being savvy a lot of the pubs and restaurants offer a "small portion" menu which is handy if you don't want a big meal but don't want a kiddie choice.

I quite like reheated chippy chips:). I make quite a lot of wedges etc. and use spray oil to coat them. It's only a couple of calories a squirt and a few squirts is all you need. It is dearer than just buying oil (though you could make up your own spray) but the bottle lasts ages.

I'm not sure about food for tonight I had toast with cheese spread with a couple of plums and lunch will be a sarnie I might take a steak out of the freezer or a piece of gammon.:)

Pleased to see you are making the most of trolley Dolley. I haven't named mine yet. I think I am going to find it really useful, you seem to be getting on well with yours and getting a lot of use out of it.

Going for a picnic sounds like a good idea, you bought the right type of food for one.

    Meaning getting it on/off buses?

I've found in the last few years that I usually just get offered help by someone younger when it comes to getting a suitcase on/off a train. Both sexes will do so - and I reckon it's courtesy of my now having white hair...

The odd times I've taken a shopping trolley on a bus - then I've never had a problem with smiling sweetly at either a younger person (or, if need be, the busdriver) and asking if they will help me if I think it's too heavy for me to do.

Now how would I manage this on a bus, I wonder!

Very slowly the first few times :)

You'll find a technique that works for you, so you still look cool/hip/trendy and not on your last legs and desperate to pop out for your copy of People's Friend :)

I made up one pitta, with just a huge tomato .... looked at it ... and scoffed it.

Sun keeps coming/going and it's breezy - and there are two opposite directions I COULD go in .... neither of which fill me with excitement. OR there is an optional "Fun Day" 6 miles away, which will probably be dire, but it'll be "out".

So now I have too many choices - and I am not a decision maker.

I'll sit and dream of pitta fillings that could be achieved with what I've got in the house .... and end up going nowhere.
  • ...and back to the topic of cereals (that being something I bet singles eat more than most....).

Just done a tryout of some new cereals I spotted in Aldi. I saw Paleo Muesli there in Aldi. Duly decided on another food experiment and bought both flavours (fruity and nutty).

Just had some of the fruity one - and 'twas nice:). I'm not a fan of any pre-prepared cereals normally - but thought I'd give it a go and I might prefer paleo ones and I could be sure they're only food. So it has in it sunflower seeds/pumpkin seeds/blackcurrants, redcurrants, coconut, almond, date paste, honey. Just realised that means = no grains. Anyway - tasty way of getting a variety of nutrients - with minimal effort, so handy for CBA days to just have a bowl of that with fruit and some sort of milk/"mylk".

Not child meals I know but my Mum regularly has a starter then pudding if she fancies it too, with no main course at all. Ill health caused her to have no appetite for over a year and when she did eat she would invariably be sick. She is much better now but still eats little meals about 5 times a day as it suits her better.
