Decided on a roast chicken this week. This will be for 2 of us Sun and Mon
then just me for the rest.

    Sun Roast Chicken dinner.
Mon Cold chicken with bubble & squeak and pickled beetroot.
    Tues Chicken curry
Weds Chicken pie chips and veg.
    Thurs Chicken casserole.

Have some ys soup mix in freezer so will make a pot of minestrone soup with the carcass.

Not a bad haul from a £3.28 chicken.

In my youth my nana used to sweep her hands into the basins of the slot machines (the bit where the winnings come out) to see if anything had been left behind - we'd all go to the seaside for fish and chips and a flutter on the pokeys (slot machines) and she'd insist we pushed her slowly so she could check for change as we passed :D.

Somethings never change, when we take the grandchildren for a walk along the prom we mostly finish up in the arcade bit of the fair near the pier. And they love going round the 2p machines that slide coins over the edge, the type you put a coin it the top & hope it will drop just right to force other coins out

This time of year is great, nice & quite except for plop of the odd coin being forced out, and the GC do get a lot of fun checking plus few bob, out of the machines

Just popped back in but think I dont belong here.

I was left on my own on Saturday.
    Menu:
breakfast. Peanut butter on toast. That's the healthy bit done then.

lunch. Fried egg on fried bread.

other food eaten during afternoon/evening. Hot cross bun. half a bar of dark chocolate, (oops. healthy again) 2 clementines, half a dozen dolly mixtures, an elderly cheese scone, a bit of cold crumpet left by my DGD and a fluff encrusted polo excavated from my dressing gown pocket.

I'll crawl back under my stone.

What makes you think you don't belong monnagran? Seems to me if you cook yourself or randomly eat strange combinations like most of us then you fit like a glove :D One of the major benefits of single life is being able to eat a list like yours (healthy though it is) without any outside comments. I love dolly mixtures by the way you have forced me to the internet to see where I can buy some :D

Yep...threads on MSE do tend to wander sometimes:rotfl:

....and back on topic...one of the ideas popping up a lot in the most recent crop of "cookbooks" is the one of having a major session per week (say on Sundays) in which one preps the basis of food to eat for the week.
I used to do this to a certain extent when the boys were at home not sandwiches or salads. For various reasons we used eat pretty late on a Sunday evening so had plenty of time. Would sort out evening meal for that night, make a pot of soup, fully prep Monday's meal inc peeling any veg, prep Tuesday's bar veg, prep and freeze basis for Weds. Thursday's tended to be either something I'd previously batch cooked and froze or something like sausage, beans and wedges. It worked really well and took the strain out of getting back at silly o'clock and having to start from scratch. When I get back to work I'll try and fall back to that model as it does really work:)

Good old rubber chicken :D personally I'd probably freeze most of it rather than eating ii a number of days in row but that's just me. Or what I have been doing is buying a whole chicken, taking off the legs, wings and breasts. Freezing the breasts and wings and roasting the legs. Wings are kept until I've got a few and the breasts used for stir fries or stuffed and wrapped in bacon. Carcass then goes straight in the slow cooker for stock/soup

Sounds as though you had a lovely day pleasing yourself. As far as I'm concerned all are welcome on this thread even if they just sporadically cook for one :)

I couldn't use a whole chicken. I am grossed out by raw meat and can't touch it - and can't bear to think about skin/bones and other 'nasty bits'.

I can only buy/use breast of chicken - and even then I don't touch it unless absolutely necessary.... I'll either tip the whole contents from the pack into the SC, or use a knife/fork to cut/trim it up and move it to where I wish to cook it.

Funny about any raw meat.... but whole birds ... or anything with bones/skin ... ewww. I'd rather be veggie if I had to choose between touching a whole chicken or giving up meat forever :)

I know a lot of folk are squeamish about raw meat and agree tackling a whole raw bird is not for everyone. I'm fairly ok with that sort of thing but do use the disposable latex gloves from the pound shop for handling raw fish. The sight of them doesn't bother me but I don't like the feel of them

I knocked up a cheeky little cherry flapjack, which I'm tucking into. No photo as I can't take photos after dark as the kitchen's too dark and flash looks rubbish.

You know how they go: HUGE blob of butter .... HUGE pile of sugar .... HUGE amount of syrup .... fool yourself it's healthy by using oats .... scoff the lot in under an hour :)

EDIT: It's long been history actually .... probably 15 minutes that lasted from start to end.

Picking up on previous comments re the increased costs for single households I'm wondering if fellow solo cooks have a strict budget for their food either through necessity or choice? I know there are lots of threads here and on other social media re living on a £1 a day and when the boys were at home I could manage on average at not too much above this. However, I am finding it difficult to get below on average £2 - £3 per day with drinks and household items on top of that. My food bill has been cheaper this month but that's mainly been due to using stuff up that has already been bought and paid for? I feel this is in part to increased solo cooking costs as buying smaller amounts of stuff I'm finding more expensive per kg overall. Once I get my freezer stocks down a bit I do intend to start taking advantage again of family packs of veg etc. but would welcome others views on this and if they don't mind sharing how much they spend of food and if under £2 per day how they are achieving it. For health reasons I can't eat a lot of pre-proceesed food and tbh would rather make it myself anyway most of time. Over to you folks......:D
