...wondered if my spend was pretty typical for a solo household

There is no "typical" as everybody's different.

    Meat/not.
    Organic Waitrose buying/not.
    Grows their own/not.
    Size of a planet/not.
    Boozer/not.

The question is really, do you throw anything out? If you throw it out and it is pricey ban yourself from buying it again.

    How big is your freezer?

I've never seen a Costco, they're very 'exclusive' AND regional.

I measured my freezer drawers once. Two are 14" square and 7" deep and the small one's 14"x7" and 7" deep.

It's soon full ... and using up, say, 6 brussels at a time it takes ages to free up space again.

I have 2 one in the utility which is half of a tall fridge/freezer and a free standing one about 5 ft in the garage. Lots of space for bulk buying which is not always a good thing of course

Costco is pretty nationwide I think and not really exclusive anymore but they do have some deals that you need to have a business to make the most of. One of the reasons I love it is they are a proper butchers and the meat is just gorgeous. I am heading over there this week to get some kitchen rolls but I will be wearing my blinkered glasses to avoid all those tempting meat deals. :)

    Re Food Budget.

Within reason I buy what I fancy to eat. Nothing extravagant as I am on a very tight budget, but food is one of my few pleasures in life.

However there is no way I could feed myself for £1 a day unless i really scrimped. I generally only eat once a day in the evening (maybe a slice of toast or piece of fruit during the day). I do drink a lot of milk, tea and coffee...my milk bill is at least 70p a day for a start :o

I suspect i spend nearer £3 a day but as I say..nothing special. I regularly eat toast & butter, eggs, cheese, baked beans, fruit, veg, brown rice, freshly baked bread, cheese, pizza, tins of tuna, pulses..make my own veg chilli, curry, stir fry, hummus ...that's about it really..see nowt special..oh and I often have a large bar of chocolate in the fridge which I will have a few chunks of a few days a week. Sometimes buy cereal, yoghurt and a large bag of peanuts/crisps, but not often.

An example over the weekend (Saturday I think) I bought a fresh pizza (£2), HM coleslaw (35p?) and devoured at least 2 pints of milk (alone or in tea/coffee) 75p?...

So I fail daily to keep to a tight budget, but I certainly don't feel like I am indulgent...as I say, I am on a very tight budget..but I spend little on any other luxuries so feel that a £2 pizza as a treat, every other week is allowed :o

Only if you live in the body of England. Looking at the map I'm about 20 miles now from one, but where I've moved from it was 180 miles to the nearest from there!

Lots in big cities and the middle band of England, not a great deal outside. They have 28 warehouses.

If you type in a place on this page and choose Nationwide the maps shows all of them.

I'm jealous of you all with your freezer space. Mine is a fridge/freezer with just one shelf and by the time I have my frozen veg, loaf of bread, a couple of HM boxed meals, pizza, white fish and cheese, it's full :(

Thanks I don't feel I eat extravagantly on a daily basis some days cost is very little others much more and I eat similiar items to yourself over the course of the year. It may just be one of these areas where I could if I absolutely had to get to around a £1 a day average but maybe more difficult without the economy of scale that families have I really don't know and of course food prices seem to have risen a bit since I was feeding three five + years ago

I know I'm fortunate - items were purchased in a "different" life not sure I'd have these if I'd always cooked for one :)
