Slow cookers have never appealed to me...leaving something to cook for 8 - 10 hours just seems a tadge excessive and also not very economical/energy efficient. But I know little about them and have never used one so more than willing to be corrected/educated :o
Yes as PN says slow cookers are really cheap to run which is why I'm trying to use mine more rather than the oven:D With you on not leaving stuff for 8-10 hours (except stock) as I don't like the end taste :)

Ah the old slow cooker thing.

Well I am on my second one now, having given away the humungous 6 litre one to my SIL with a hungry husband and two lovely boys. She loves it.

I then purchased a smaller one thinking I was going to be entranced by all the lovely things I could do for us in it. NO. It is now the receptacle for iphone chargers and all things electronic. I know, I know I am a madwoman.

But seriously, the slow cooker is not for me now.

I use my slow cooker overnight on low for the cheap rate alot though as stated it uses less energy anyway so four hours at the higher rate of electric isn't expensive. I don't even think my slow cooker uses 300 watts an hour on high. We have an electric oven and electric hobs and they are both energy guzzlers when you think about them against a slow cooker. For me a slow cooker is also safer as I'm disabled. It's a large 6.5L so it does huge batches of vegan stew, curry, chilli, soup etc. Use the plastic 'take away' containers as they stack well in the freezer. I've had mine around ten years I think. Wouldn't be without it. It even makes vegan rice pudding, crumbles etc.

    Good morning everyone,
Not sure what's happening on the "cooking for one" front today. I've root veg mash left so could have some of that with something - maybe liver and bacon casserole from the freezer, or I could make something else will decide later. It's wet and misrable so something comforting I think is needed but not sure what.......:)

    morning caronc
when I finally get back to a point where I can buy some meat without feeling guilty about the freezer full then i will be buying some liver. What type of liver do you get? I actually have never bought any as I have such bad memories of liver with white tubes in it from childhood vile stuff...my mother was a particularly bad cook too though so that didnt help lol however I had some of dads when we went for a pub lunch the other day and it was gorgeous so its time to try it again.

I still have some turkey left ...typical cooking for one problem this has now lasted for 3 days. What doesnt get eaten today is getting flung and I will not feel guilty :D Saying that I will probably eat it with some chips and beans :)

Morning Nelski - I get lambs liver from Tesco and have never found it full of tubes or yukky bits. I like it 'cos it copes with either long and slow or quick and hot cooking unlike pigs liver which has too strong a taste for me:)
Turkey, chips and beans sounds ok to me but know what you mean about feeling something can be never ending. I've got some pate left so need to use that today so might rethink the liver and bacon as a bit of overkill on the liver front  Think it might end up a freezer rake later :)

Thanks Nelski dinner dilemma solved - 2 slices of stuffed turkey thigh are now defrosting:D
  • I'm currently trying to think what to put on a readymade pizza base I need to use up (correction - broken into 3 pieces in transit one - but waste not want not...).

    Gotta be vegetarian.

Any (vegetarian) ideas welcome besides the cheese/tomato - which is all I can think of currently.

My favourite is spinach and ricotta or goats cheese closely followed by mushrooms, peppers, artichokes and an egg cracked on it:)
  • Pizza - tofu (can be marinated slices or done like scrambled tofu with sweet chilli sauce/bbq sauce etc), sweetcorn, peppers, courgette.

I'm not amused right now. Just came back from doctors surgery as I had an appointment booked but when I got there they had no record of it  ! I have to go back out later now. I feel sorry for OH as he is the one pushing me there and back.
    Having coffee right now.
