Well, I have 38p left of my £50 to finish the month. We needed cheese and were running low on mushrooms, so I popped into Lidly. I managed to resist the call of their £2.50/kg pork, ignore everything else and get out of there with something left in the budget. This month, we've spent £49.62 out of £50.

Dinner used up the last of the potatoes. I made "Breakfast Pie, (aka "Country Quiche" from a very ancient Sainsbug recipe book called "Potatoes"). The pastry wasn't the best - it's been years since I last made pastry and this was stiff - but the pie was scrummy and filling. The pastry: 250g flour, 100g butter, some water. The filling: 1lb cooked potatoes, 250g bacon, an onion, (fry those two together), two eggs and 250ml milk.

I have to confess, PipneyJane, that I tend to buy my pastry. It's less than £1 for a pack of ready rolled in Aldi and butter is 99p alone :o

I needed fruit and veg so did a shop at W***rose as their veg seems to last longer, treated DH to a rather gooey cake and also bought sausages, yogurt, frozen blueberries, raspberries and peas. Came to over £47 which was more than I hoped and it puts me well and truly over for the month.
However I probably wont need to shop until well into next month so hopefully it will even itself out by the end of March - here's hoping, or did I just see a flying pink pig?

At the rate i've been using pastry, it'd die somewhere in the fridge/freezer after waiting years to be used. :rotfl:

Once upon a time, i used to make quiches a couple of times a month and was quite a dab hand at shortcrust pastry. I used to be able to roll it out quite thinly, so much so that I'd use half the pastry quantity made and freeze the rest for next time. (I can't remember why I stopped but I reckon it had something to do with the old kitchen in this house - which was dire.) Anyway, I reckon the issue this time was that a) at 100g, I didn't use enough butter - but I was following the recipe - and b), I didn't add enough water to the dough. I think I should have used 125g of butter for the traditional ratio half fat to flour.

Now, I'm off to make breakfast: bacon and cheese toasties using up some sliced cooking bacon - the last of the bacon from the pie - and some more of Lidly's finest cheap mature cheddar.

    Declaring £556.38 out of £600.
Not celebrating though, just found out the medical insurance my OH has won't pay for my son's Ed Psyc and Behavioural Optometry bills (had been told they would )
Why? Because Aspergers is a chronic condition. £940 down, of which I had £348 in my emergency third purse. Belt tightening next month....

  • Spent another £5.48 today. £2.99 of that was on non- essentials. I went into the greengrocers and there was a lady there promoting her range of spicy pastes. I had a taste and bought a vindaloo paste as it was delicious and it's nice to support a small local business.
