  • Ouch purpleybat I hope you feel better soon!

Thanks to all your chatting about cooking bacon I picked some up today, checking it was sliced and not just a big lump (thanks again!).

Bought ingredients for mum's birthday cake, this comes under birthday budget, whatever is left over after making the cake is balanced out by using stocks already in, so I don't feel cheated either which way.

Also got some treats for DS (DS and discretionary budgets) for being so amazing with all the work at the other house and getting a certificate at school (he gets it on Monday, but we were told today).

Groceries came in at £34.79and I'll update my signature in a moment. DS copied my list and he crossed his off when we were shopping - so cute!

I like to find a pack that's in one lump sometimes as I then have boiled bacon and cabbage, then when its cold slice it up lovely on sandwich or with a salad.

You know, I debated for a while whether I'd start a separate thread for £50 February. Tomorrow, we have a football match at mid-day, so will have cheese toasties for a late breakfast, skip lunch and come home to a Cuban black bean stew in the slow cooker (into which I'll throw a packet of cooking bacon from the freezer).
£50 is really good. I possibly could at a stretch manage it, but I do find £60, which I have been doing lately just doable I might try next month. Football match huh - not Chelsea. Im trying to think of an honorable way to leave my guitar lesson early, which finishes at 1.00, which is in Camden, as Arsenal play at 12.30. Find a pub where they are showing the game and sit like 'Billy No Mates'. I really need to get a life - lol.

£!5.05 spend from grocery budget yesterday, plus £10 from bulk buy fund for washing liquid that was on offer (3 for £10) in Morries. Pretty stable on the bulk buy budget front as I paid myself back £12 for one of the boxes of catfood stockpiled from Farm Foods last week.

Also saw on the news why I am having trouble getting courgettes (bad weather in southern Europe)- anyone notice the prices for veg going up yet?

It seems to me that Mr T, S'bugs and A$da take it in turns to have the best/cheapest cooking bacon. My hubby watches out for it like a hawk and bought 4 packets at Mr T's last month. Since I often use it as a substitute for ham, we like it in chunks but without a lot of fat. I'll do you a deal - you can have the slices and I'll have your chunks.

No deal! I need the chunks and the slices! ;)

I love the lidl bacon chunks cooked with carrots, parsnips, onions, lentils and a little thyme at the end.
Do I need it or just want it.

Yes, veg going up. No broccoli in local Morries a few weeks ago (who knew we imported that - it grows brilliantly in Lincolnshire - bonkers!) - I bought a big bag of frozen as a substitute. It is fine, just a bit watery if left on too long and they don't peel their stalks (fussy child and I never stopped...).

Butter too. Up from 85p-99p in Aldo's and £1.02 to £1.08 in Morries. Strange as it says British on the packs - maybe one of those things where the milk is not British but because it is made into butter here, they can call it British.

BTW I always like the idea of paying myself back when I use things from my stores but I always forget, so I divide my annual budget into 13 instead so there is a reserved pot for buying in bulk or for my larder!

I've often wondered how much to allocate to the 'bulk buy fund' and I'm going to try your idea.
I also have a 'bulk buy meat/fish budget' and I've allocated £2 a day to that. I've already spent 292/720 but I think I have enough meat to last the year apart from lamb but I'll wait until September when the prices are at their cheapest. The balance just gives me enough wriggle room to buy bits and bobs like YS, offal and bacon.

I was so tempted to go and buy some cooking bacon after reading all the postings, because I have an urge to make a terrine and I haven't enough in the fridge to line a tin. Thinking cap on (doesn't happen often) - I'm going to make a layered raised pie instead. So that's a NSD for me :j
