VW Golf - £329 for an Oil Change

Do you just pluck these numbers out of your head? On GSF the cheapest filter for the OP's car is £10 and the oil is over £50. Even with one of their regular discount codes this is not £25.
Even on Eurocarparts a Bosch oil filter for a 4 year old petrol VW Golf is under a fiver with their discount code!!
If a garage cannot buy in good oil in bulk @ less than £20 quid per 5l then they shouldn't/wouldn't be in business!
What a mug!!:rotfl:0 -

At least you are consistent. By that I mean consistently wrong.
Are you now saying that you should buy an oil filter from Euro's (Which is currently £6.99 with the discount applied) and then provide this to a garage whilst demanding they change your oil at cost price and zero labour? If a garage did that they certainly wouldn't last long!
Anyway I think we've hijacked this thread enough and it's clear you just post rubbish, toodle pip.0 -

No, I'm pointing out to you how, as a member of the public, I can buy the stuff needed at cheaper prices, if I can do that then what the hell you think those in the trade can do?
I repeat, I could get an oil change for about £25 at a whole host of garages, you carry on paying £42 for it at National!!!:rotfl:0 -
Spoke to the VW Service manager today and he said in the Terms and Conditions, spark plugs / air / pollen filters are replaced only if required. This is backed up by their youtube video: youtube.com /watch?v=AEgGDtoPl3k
I told him I wasn't happy paying £329 for an oil change so as a gesture of good will he got everything changed for me and also the next minor service is free. Goes to show, always complain if you're unhappy.0 -

But you'll be doing your own minor service. You need to make use of that syphon you bought.0 -
Quite a lot of modern cars are fussy about the oil, I do believe in using decent oil to the correct spec. I do my own and families servicing, prices vary by car. Oil for a basic run around is about £20. For a performance car it can be more like £45. Service parts for my wifes ford KA are unbelievably cheap - This is a copy and paste from a recent order ..
1 503590038 Crosland Fuel Filter Ford Ka 1.3 2008 £4.69
4 408773530 NGK Spark Plug Ford Ka 1.3 2008 £9.56
1 501590018 Crosland Oil Filter Ford Ka 1.3 2008 £4.19
1 507590108 Crosland Cabin Filter Ford Ka 1.3 2008 £6.59
1 CLICK AND COLLECT Click and Collect Internet Order £0.00
Subtotal £25.03
Coupon Benefit -£8.13
Total £16.90
so thats plugs x4 and all filters for £17.
Oil was around £20 I think, I use fully synthetic on everything. mobil 1 from Costco was last good buy.
It doesn't need everything changing, but at that price?? When I don't need to change pugs I remove, clean and put a spot of copper slip on the threads anyway. I'd say a typical full service costs me about £50 in materials. Some parts are cheaper from unipart - just order in advance, servicing isn't an unexpected event.Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.0 -

Mann filter for VW Golf on GFS, £4.
5l of oil for £21? Easy.
You would have to be a sap to pay £42 at National for an oil change for a VW Golf as suggested by someone earlier.
It's £42 for my 2.3 SLK, the op will need to put their Reg in to get a quote for their particular car. There is also a 10% off discount voucher to print off and use as well.0 -

I used to work as a Service Advisor at VW and this is news to me. If a vehicle came in and the major service was due, all four filters were changed
I use a local VAG specialist for any work on my car. I have never been to a main stealer and I never will0 -
Upon checking my service checklist, I can see they have inspected the air filter, pollen filter and spark plugs but did not replaced them as they weren't required. So basically I paid £329 for an oil change and a VW stamp.
It seems like, from the list you quoted, you paid for ;
Remove and check pollen filter.
Remove and check air filter.
Remove and check spark plugs.
Remove wheels and check brakes.
Check/adjust tension of all drive belts.
Check gearbox oil level.
Check final drive oil level.
Vehicle inspection and report to include all lights, instruments, bodywork, glass, locks, battery, coolant levels, drive belts, braking system, steering, hoses, drive shafts, suspension and exhaust system.
Full vehicle road test.
Diagnostic check including report.
Re-set service interval display.
What's their hourly labour rate?0
