VW Golf - £329 for an Oil Change

My Golf is 4 years old (45k miles) and today I took it to a VW dealership for a Major Service.
It has never had it's pollen filter, air filter and spark plugs changed before so I was expecting them to be replaced.

Our major service will help your car run smoothly. The recommended service interval is every 24 months or 20,000 miles (whichever comes first).

Prices from: £329 for models up to and including 2.0 litre engines and £399 for Touareg.

It includes: Oil & filter change. Replace pollen filter. Replace air filter. Spark plugs (petrol engine) or fuel filter (diesel engine). Remove wheels and check brakes. Check/adjust tension of all drive belts. Check gearbox oil level. Check final drive oil level. Vehicle inspection and report to include all lights, instruments, bodywork, glass, locks, battery, coolant levels, drive belts, braking system, steering, hoses, drive shafts, suspension and exhaust system. Full vehicle road test. Diagnostic check including report. Re-set service interval display. Volkswagen stamp in service book.

Upon checking my service checklist, I can see they have inspected the air filter, pollen filter and spark plugs but did not replaced them as they weren't required. So basically I paid £329 for an oil change and a VW stamp.

Do you think I should complain?

    What a rip off!

Any old garage will do it for about £25 OP.

If they promised to replace things and didn't, then yes, I'd complain.

But you have paid for a whole pile of inspection and checking, so not true to say it was £329 for an oil change.

Every garage I've been to have big drums of oil, including National as mentioned out a few posts back.

That's a lot cheaper than piddling little 4 or 5l containers you get in Halfords and the like.

£25 quid is more than enough.
  • It would have been cheaper if you actually told them to change things rather....than check things.

You could have just taken the wheels off yourself and used break cleaner.

Please note that at no point during this work was the kettle ever put out of commission and no chavs were harmed during the making of this post.

I always change my own oil and filter, that way i know what goes in and that its done. Main dealer costs are always pricey. Maybe if you state location ,readers could recommend a decent independent for next time? Of course you can also pay too cheap and have it butchered.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

The thing is with main dealer servicing, you are buying into goodwill and preserving warranty. If your engine went pop or the gearbox failed, you would want goodwill. Check your service booklet, that tells you what should be done.

If those items were not replaced, then yes you have basis for complaint
