So why exactly are you still using Windows as an OS?One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -
I am happy with Win 10 as an OS - it's the add ons that I am avoiding using...
You're not avoiding using them though, you're ripping them out which shows that you're far from happy with it. If you were happy with it you'd simply ignore the parts you don't like and not use them.
Those add-ons are part of the evolving OS and what you seem to be after isn't the Windows 10 OS but a far more simple OS where you add what functionality you require as and when you need it.
That OS isn't Windows 10. It's a commercial OS that isn't meant to be messed about with. Yes, people will find a way but........
Why don't you find a bare bones version of Linux and customise it into the OS that you do want with the programs and features you need?
Create your own distro - TwuncleOS. It will have lower overheads and it won't do all the spying that so bothers you about Windows.
You could then use all the time you spend messing about taking Windows apart and fixing it to learn the differences between Linux and Windows which, for most people, aren't that great. You'd end up with something you'd be happy with.
From your other posts, the ones not involving Windows problems, you do a lot of video work. Linux is great at video and media processing. Give something else a go but not just for a day or two, give it some time and I mean proper time
I'm not having a go at you or Windows, in fact you have to admire the sheer determination. Do yourself and your sanity a favour and get the irritation that is Windows out of your life.
Personally I rather like Windows 10 even tough I've been a Unix/Linux and Mac user for decades, it's evolving into damned fine OS. My Macbook Pro dual boots with MacOS and Win 10 purely to allow me to keep up with the Windows OS evolution so I can help my non techie friends out when needed. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -
The problem for people like 50Twuncle is the use of the word 'Spying' being over used and out of context, it brings all sorts of wild imaginings.;)Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

My impression was that moaning about Windows was more of a hobby than anything else...
I certainly didn't like Vista and even bought Windows 7 to be shot of it.
I didn't like Windows 8 but got around most of my dislike by using a program to re-introduce a start menu and get shot of that "modern" stuff.
I started out on Win 10 still using that but quickly just went native. Once I figured out how to quickly get to stuff I wanted to use I was pretty happy with it and still am. I do use OOS10 to turn off features I'm not overly happy about though. Cortana may be wonderful but as I've never used it I really don't know - if MS want to know all about me they'll just have to ask Google.0 -
MS do include a free keylogger with your Win 10 installation - whilst this is simple to remove (by selecting STOP GETTING TO KNOW ME in "Privacy") - why have they even tried to use one in the first place ?0

Because they really do want to see what people are doing so they can improve things for the majority.
If the default was opted out then almost nobody would bother to volunteer feedback so the default is opted in and again most people can't be bothered to opt out so MS get some feedback around what people find useful and what they never use broken down by home and business demographic.
I think the thing to remember is that it really isn't about you, or anyone else, it's about customer feedback and improving the experience for future versions. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -

Yeah right - and Donald Trump is going to make a good president !!
MS are NOT going to do "something for nothing" - they are a business - in it purely for profit...
They would sell their kids for profit - to the highest bidder0 -
That is the description of any profitable/successful business.Yeah right - and Donald Trump is going to make a good president !!

The whole point is that, if you want the service there is a trade off. People are using computers differently to the way they did back in the day. They are no longer the domain of the geek and people are just wanting them to work. It would seem, rightly or wrongly, that they don't really care about all the other stuff.
I guess, that the business is going to cater for the larger audience and not worry too much about someone who has no use for the service.
I wouldn't think they care if you don't use something on the OS, or not, as long as you are using something.:)Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

Exactly!
And to make that profit they have to get it right and to get it right they need customer feedback.
Commercial users and companies are always looking at maximising their own profit and reducing costs.
One huge cost is the IT desktop budget.
Most companies are already huge Linux users on the many servers they use and have a lot of Linux experience, people like me. With the advances made in the *nix world moving to a Linux desktop makes more sense than ever.
You must remember the news when the French Parliament announced it was dropping the Windows desktop and going with Ubuntu?
Then there's the US Department of Defense along with the US submarine fleet, the FAA, the Spanish Govt, EU Cities like Munich as well as the largest bank in China.
The list goes on and is growing.
Microsoft aren't exactly on the back foot but they can see the way things are going and they need very badly to get it right.
Long gone are the days when they were the only game in town. One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0
