Snow on the way are you ready for it

  • From todays weather forecast it appears that even the warmer south of England might get some snow over the next few days and because we don't get frozen in very often it makes folks here nervous, we're just not used to snowy conditions to deal with. I'm going to get in some more milk and bread for He Who Knows in case the pavements get too icy for me to stay upright. Other than that I know we'll have enough food and fuel to see us through any disruption there MIGHT be. The worse thing for me is getting cabin fever from being stuck indoors too long but rather that than a trip to A & E!!!

Starting to snow off and on here now, hellish windy night and temp dropping fast. We get snow every winter at this height and are all sorted and prepared for it. I do hate a winter without at least one good-going blizzard!
The worst one here was 1985, it was worse than 2010. The higher roads were solid up to the top of the dykes and they had to dynamite it in the end. Our car got stuck for 5 days up on the moor, and even the snow plough drivers had to be airlifted out.
Our forecast is heavy snow from 2pm today until 2pm tomorrow. :D

I doubt we'll get much down here at all (SE), but I'm nervous about going home - it's quite rural (village in SW Scotland) and prone to snow and bad weather. I wouldn't want to get snowed in and am nervous of slipping!

I remember 2010 - we had temperatures of -18 and I had gone ith my sister to see about getting her car fixed. It occurred to me that I was in a vest top, thin cardigan and useless boots (new ones, literally a week old and the sole was coming away from the upper!).

I remember having to get medicine for my granny and having to dig my dads car (a prius, which was practically a sled) out of the driveway. There was me, my dad and my uncle out digging while my mum, sister and aunt watched from inside the house! We got so far and then the car got stuck going up the slightest incline and we had to be pushed by a group of boys. When we were going down one hill, we tries to turn and the car i did quite an impressive turning slide. Luckily we were all ok, but we had to park it up as best we could and then walk home anyway. In knee-deep snow - easy for my dad at 6'4, a bit less so for me at 5'7!

I reckon we'll be absolutely fine down here, but am still nervous of slipping.

freyasmum I'm 5ft and in 2010 we had 4.5ft of snow in the back garden lol. I took one step, couldn't get my back leg oot, and eventually fell flat on my face lol. Is sunny here then goes dark and sudden flurries of snow. Wind is a bigger problem and I hope my elect doesn't go off, I'm knitting from a pattern online.

Always ready here as we can get lots or it stops going over the Roaches,Peak District. Problem we have is the large rural catchment area for local schools where the weather can be totally different. I use a walking stick so will be staying put as scared to death of falling . Teens can go to shop if necessary. Also my daughter's friend knows if she can't get home by bus she is always welcome to stay here. But at moment forecasts keep changing.

    Be careful .

I have quite enjoyed reading your posts, and realised that I'm not at all badly off when it comes to location and access to services.

I have decided to grow a pair and made sure the diary is packed for the next few days so I have no choice but to meet my commitments. I have wellies for the snow, but they are worse than useless in the ice (in fact the cause of a couple of nasty falls as they slip on ice, and worse still, pools of water on ice) but I have secured spikes to a pair of slip on shoes, which are great in compacted ice. They cost me all of 99p :D

But driving - forget it! No need to put myself or anyone else in danger.

It's starting here as well now

It's the wind that's the worry, there's branches and trees down all over and assorted debris flying around. Just been out and secured the wheelie bins and moved what pots a could closer to the house. It's bloody hard getting doors and gates open, or even be able to stay upright :)

Still I got the coal in and the fires are lit

All we can do is see what happens.

Yes we usually get stuff at the same time as Norn Iron V4. Wind still bad here and cloud building up.
