Snow on the way are you ready for it

Good Morning all, just been reading about the snow that's due to get hear by next weekend :eek:I hope it doesn't ,but are you all ready for a few days of inconvenience .The shops will no doubt have a run on bread and milk (I'm not fussed about bread as I no longer eat it :)) and I use UHT milk all the time anyway.
Looking at my store cupboards I feel I have more than enough to get me through I am lucky that I have nice neighbours if things get too uncomfortable .I use a stick to walk with so if the weather is bad I tend to stay at home ,no point clogging up the overworked NHS with a daft old woman who fell over whilst out :)

If it looks as though we shall get some of the white stuff I may stock up on a bit more fresh fruit, oranges etc.

I have more than enough veg to keep me going. But it will be a great opportunity to use my existing stuff up.I am doing my best to stay away from food shopping this month and using up some of my freezer

How about the rest of you.I know there are a few on here who live in quite rural locations which could cause a problem.

I have lots of books to read and my knitting, plus the wireless or TV so I'm not too fussed about a bit of bad weather

No doubt the country will grind to a halt as a scattering of snow seems to put everyone in a panic .Our northern European friends cope reasonably well, but for some reason weather is a major thing in the UK, either too hot and a bit of dry grass (think how Australia copes ), or too wet (Plenty of countries have rain :)) or snow (Moscow keeps working ).

I think its the scaremongers in the media that get people panic buying. If you're honest most of us will be able to do without rushing off to the shops at the first flutter of snow flakes :):):)

The tabloids say "-10C arctic blast!" every year, and people still buy the papers and believe it. It's like saying "next week your car will break down".... well... yeah, it might.

Ignore anything mentioning "ExactaWeather" and just watch the BBC forecasts for an informed, statistically realistic and evidence-based prediction.

I personally use the BBC "week ahead" forecast, RainToday for real-time rain & snow radar, and MetCheck.com for a general idea of what it might be like a few days in advance, and it's currently showing massive snow dump of.... umm... 0.1mm on Thursday...

Always wise to be well stocked-up anyway.

Now that I've moved to windy/rainy West Wales - then I'm very well stocked-up on a permanent basis with food. Don't know quite how I've managed to have a freezer taller than me completely filled with food - but it is...:rotfl:

Also well stocked-up with books to read - for all those times I decide to just go "Out" for the sake of it (eg for a walk) and take a look out the window at the weather and have to change my mind. I keep number of local taxi firm for all those times I'm going out for something specific (eg voluntary work or social) that I've firmly decided on - in case the weather is too bad to walk there.

Now working on making the house "cosier" - as it feels to me like houses here have to be more of a "home"/less of a "base" to operate from (partly because of the weather).

Well the question is will it or won't it? snow where I live . I live just outside a large city and we very rarely get snow and if we do it sometimes is only a small covering. Been about 4 years since any weather disruption with snow.
Will probably buy a little extra in, but my snow warnings on my phone keep changing between Thursday and Saturday. It is showing though a drop in temperature.

Yes, we are, we could eat from the freezer for a while though fresh veg and milk always need topping up. But I can get those as I have to be out and about for work.
I've got decent boots with deep tread, they've lasted years though they are a bit big (son grew out of them) so need two pairs of socks, nice warm feet!
I am hoping it won't snow though, I am hoping to go up north to family.
I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back

Me too! Snow would be unusual here but I remember the horrors of 2010 /2011 when living in Newcastle. Six weeks of nothing much moving because of the snow, even walking was difficult but I lived very close to the city centre so managed OK. My car had to be dug out firstly from the deep snow coverings and then from the inches of ice trapping it which formed round the wheels.

Now I'm in a rural and semi-remote area things are different but I'm always prepped. Freezer has got loads in so I won't starve. There's plenty of logs in both barns for the woodburner and my winter woollies are ready. Small barn also has a store of tinned goods etc.

Even though neighbours are scattered around most keep in touch and some make an effort to stop if passing just to check.

    Hope everyone keeps safe.
  • Always ready, plenty of dried milk and canned and dried food, crucially a huge supply of TEA BAGS without which life is unthinkable, camping stove and plenty of gas, solar lamps and a wood stove in case of power problems, good thick waxed jacket and walking boots for being outside plus Yak Trax for icy conditions, sheepskin hat and gloves for extremities, nice heavy wool blankets to put on the bed and a supply of unread books to keep us from boredom if we're snowed in. A wind up radio so we can stay in touch with the situation. Plenty of our medication to see us through a snowed in period too. Having said that we'll most likely not see more than flurries down here in South Hampshire BUT if it happens we're ready!!!

I had six weeks of not getting out in 2010, hence me having a good stash of everything in and available, including chocolate, candles, hobbies, matika battery radio etc Fuel is already stashed wherever I can downstairs in my house, 10kg bags of wood pellets. Just got to make sure that my torches are fully charged and also the makita batteries

I really don`t care if I am prepared in vain, I end up with lots of supplies but so what? I don`t have to spend anything for a long time and I have enough stash to feed my hobbies for an even longer time

I recently spent a lot of money on a very large and very warm insulating curtain for my bedroom, one s facing wall is all triple galazed glass. That was money well spent, as was the time on making wool caplets, which I can wear while snug in my bed, reading. All this stuff is on the winter thread btw

Snow plough came through the village in 2010 and consequently the lane was like shot ice on snow, until we had a good thaw. Far too dangerous to walk and saw cars spinning around. That was the year when no online delivery could come for christmas and I cancelled all visitors because of the dangerous conditions

Since the white hell of 2010, the mere mention of snow fills me with dread. I've never recovered from the devastation it caused, people having to light fires everywhere and melt snow to get water and seeing animals dead in the fields. It was almost at the point where I'd have to use the doors/furniture as fuel.

I'll be worrying all week now. I'm prepared, as much as reasonably possible. I live in a very cold area and if snow is coming anywhere, it's bound to be bad here.
