I also had a similar problem with a usb memory and win98.
Even though I installed the drivers that came with it, the PC could not find the device.
The only way it would work was to install the drivers, turn off PC, connect device, reboot, it would then detect new hardware.
I had to do this every time I wanted to reconnect.(I was also trying to save data).
Eventually it somehow sorted itself, and worked fine.Move along, nothing to see.0 -

Have you used any other USB devices on this computer? If the answer is no, then you may need to enable the USB ports in the BIOS if they have never been used and are not enabled. see here for BIOS access.:doh: Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
You could try to install the drivers by using Add New Hardware from via Start > Settings > Control Panel.
It's been so long since I've used W98 but you could try this link:
http://www.windowsreinstall.com/install/tips/drivers/windowshasnt.htm
and direct the install wizard to the location of the driver files.0 -
