If Superscraper's suggestion fails for any reason as a last resort you could buy a USB hard drive caddy, take the drive out of your old laptop, put it in the caddy and plug it into your new machine. You'll then see it as an external drive and be able to copy the data.

You basically have 2 or 3 options here.
1: You say you don't have internet on the old laptop so download the driver (Or ask a friend to) from superscraper's link and burn it onto a CD or floppy disk. Then from here you can install it onto the old laptop, enabling you to use the USB flash drive.
2: Take the old laptop to a friend's house. Put the data onto a floppy disk and transfer it to their PC, then either burn it to a CD/DVD or upload it to a file hosting site. If you can't find one try Yahoo geocities or your ISP should have given you some free space. Then you can download to the new laptop. (Assuming you have internet access!)
You say there is no DVD drive on the old laptop, is there a CD drive? Can you write CDs with it? If there is a DVD drive on the new laptop it will be able to read CDs as well as DVDs.
If so:
3: Burn the data onto a blank CD and transfer it to the new laptop.
HTH!

USB Portable flash driver. Install this on your 98 laptop.
mmm, so I've saved that win98 driver unto my desktop, but when I then go to open it it brings up a box saying program not found, windows cannot find aol.exe, This program is needed for opening files of typoe 'ZIP File'...

You will need to install winzip or some other zip extracting programBug? That's not a bug, that's an undocumented feature. :dance:0 -

Windows should normally be able to open it but sounds like you've got AOL carp on there and it's messing up the system. AOL's software is pointless, you'd be best avoiding it for future reference (even if you're with AOL, you still don't need their software). As colin says, install winzip.
Actually you're probably better off opening up the zip file on your new laptop and then saving the contents of the zip file to your old laptop."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

I stand to be corrected but win 98 does not have the ability to uncompress a zip file without an additonal software
It's been ages since I used 98, so I'll assume you're right which is why I mentioned the second suggestion (I was assuming the new laptop would be XP or Vista), saves having to install anything else."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Powerarchiver is utility for extracting files. If you download any version before v7.0 it is freeware - http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=powarc
v6.11 works with Windows 98.0 -
I use 7-zip, it opens zip files, rar files ... and it's free and doesn't bring up annoying boxes like winzip does asking you to buy it!I don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right0

Still not quite there guys, although I think I'm getting closer!
I've managed to unzip the memory stick drive, but when I try and run or install the .exe file I get an error message saying failed when copy file umss.sys! The umss file is there although when I open it on its own it opens on notepad and looks to be unformatted. I wonder if the problem is that this file should be a able to be opened using an app that I don't have.
If I can just get this to work allowing me to save unto the memory stick it'll be so good (I'm gettin kinda frustrated with this problem!)
The floppy isn't an option as the space on floppy is so small.
The CD option doesnt seem to work since when I try to save anything unto the CD I get the message E// is not accessible the device is not ready.
I guess I could try and use the free hosting space of my broadband provider (I now have net access on the old lappy), but as I've never done this before it'd be a lot easier if I was just able to save unto my wee memory stick! Please help!0 -

Did you unzip (extract) the driver file/s to their own directory? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0
