The boiler is always turned off, only gets turned on when the missus wants a bath, which isnt very often.

The shower is electric so no need to turn the boiler on for an hour just for a 10 minute shower.

As indicated above, you appear to have missed the point of E7 water heating.

The tank is heated by off-peak electricity and the amount of heat loss is much smaller than most people appreciate. The tanks are tested to British Standard and a well insulated tank will typically lose around 1.5kWh over a 24 hour period with the water at 65C. In any case that heat is not lost because it warms the fabric of the house.

Whist you might shower instead of having a bath, surely you want hot water at other times of the day to wash hands/shave etc. It really does seem pointless to boil kettles at peak-rate electricity when you can have hot water on tap.

By turning the immersion on only as and when you need it is costing you more than putting it in over night, even if it's only for the odd bath, washing up. Use the timer (check it's set up correctly) to heat the water at night. It doesn't need to be for long, just enough to get you the water you need for the day. Your day rate is likely costing you twice as much as your day rate.

What time do you turn the power on to the storage heaters?
• We are having exactly the same issue as described. Moved into a rented 3 bed semi and the cost of electric heating is proving to be astronomical. We are also with Eon and after living in the house for a total of 8 days we received a electricity bill of £65!! We are not on the economy 7 tariff as we barely use any electricity at night. We have the heating and hot water on for 1 hour in the morning and then the heating comes on for 3 hours at night. I've spent that past day walking to and from my meter box to take readings. In the first hour of heating operating tonight it used 8kw!! This seems pretty high to me and would love to hear any solutions before my bank balance reduces to zero!

8kWh in the first hour is not high - a gas CH boiler might use 20+ kWh in the same period(albeit it would cost less than 8kWh of electricity). Once the rooms are up to temperature the consumption should drop.

Are you sure that the opening and closing meter readings on that 8 day bill were correct?

What type of heaters have you got?
• All meter readings were checked and are accurate. It came as a slight shock when the first bill arrived yesterday! The house has barely used any electricity all day up until the point that the electric heating system came on.

We have a control module fixed to the wall to set timing programmes for hot water & heating, then we have an electrically powered heater and water storage system with immersion heater for use if required. Unless we can find a way to reduce the bills it's safe to say we won't be living in a house with electric heating again!

Good morning Wainy399 and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry that you're struggling with this, electric heating can be very expensive, especially when it's so cold.

Have you got a manual for the heaters to make sure you're getting the best from them that you can?

I understand you don't use much over night, but have a look to see if there is a better tariff for you, with us on our website or for the whole market check out the comparison sites.

The way you pay can also affect the prices as we do give a reduction in standing charge for paying by monthly Direct Debit, so this may also be something to have a look at.

As I've said a bit earlier in the thread, take some regular reads if you can at the same time each day, this really does help to establish what's using the energy.

I'm here to help you :)

Thank you
