Trump will bring about a new era of prosperity

You mean like Philip Green....I'm sure he considers himself very valuable to himself and his own interests. I doubt the pensioners of BHS would agree however.
I am not a supporter of either Trump or Green, but I don't think that makes business a bad thing nor most business people either.
Neither do I consider business people are unsuitable for political office.
I invite you to give a view.0 -

Many Brexiteers say they voted Brexit because although staying in the single market was the obvious 'business friendly' thing to do they still voted Brexit for moral/political reasons ie 'taking back control'. So in effect this for them was a political decision in which business played no part.0 -
I don't think you can run a country like a business. A business is run for it's shareholders and the objective is profit. A country is different....there are many competing interests and objectives. For instance in my own area criminal justice profit incentives have clearly reduced the quality of the service and has led to corruption within the service. I think defence, (main duty of a leader), education, health, housing etc are all highly vulnerable in a similar way if run on a 'business' basis'.
I was not suggesting that a country should be run by in the same way as a business.
I was questioning whether you were against business people becoming politicians and what value you placed on business.
what would be the idea qualifications to become a politician?
Maybe a degree from Oxbridge followed by an internship with a political a party?0 -
I've always wanted to see business people in charge. Career politicians know very little of wider life, that's the point of Trump.
Trump knows nothing about wider life - he complained about how hard a start he had because his dad only gave him $1,000,000 to buy his first home. He's led about as sheltered a life as it's possible to do. Even career politicians (who I have pretty much nothing but contempt for) have to meet and interact with normal people from time to time. Most everything he does will be to promote American business and workers.
Businesses maybe, but he doesn't care about workers. He's very much only interested in himself (see him using his own properties for campaigning and insisting visiting dignitaries stay in his hotels - he's already using his position to drive money into his business empire, also see all the suppliers he's screwed over because they don't have the money to sue him to pay his bills).
I've seen no evidence that Trump is even thinking about making life better for anyone he isn't personally related to, and plenty signs of him being a sociopath.0 -

The best politicians are often lawyers, not for good reasons perhaps..... they know how to word legislation and twist meanings:rotfl:
Seriously though....the best politicians are perhaps people who just haven't gone into it as a career but have done something else beforehand in business, service etc.0 -
In your world a mass of people endure undignified non-jobs and no hope, but hey, they pay less for Chinese knickers. An entirely unsustainable model whereby trade deficits grow until they can grow no more. This view is a council of despair and no longer tolerated.
Protectionist policies push up the cost of living which is more than the price of Chinese knickers.I've argued in Discussion Time for years we all ought to be happy to pay a little more for a better shared society, which means higher wages and better jobs.
Sounds like the basis for a motivational poster. High in inspiration but low in substance.
It might make you happy to pay more than you need to live but you'd be in a minority.
Being forced to pay more for what are political reasons wouldn't exactly improve my happiness quotient.0 -
Nearly had a thread that wasn't hijacked by mention of the EU or Clapton's signalling of just how much he cares about the peoples of developing nations. Oh well.0
