You're betting on a stock market where Trump has managed to knock $1bn+ off the stock value of 2 different companies, overnight, by making tweets based on false information?

I guess if you get in now, and they recover, you'll do well. But the US stock market under Trump is not stable. It can't be when you've got a lunatic at the reigns.

He'll make a lot of promises, cut business taxes, and then fail to follow through on them and worm his way out leaving everyone else high and dry. Just like what's left of his business empire.

America will enjoy a good period of real prosperity and enterprise, I don't want to miss out. I trust you ardent EU cultists are putting your money where your mouths are? I bet you're not, deep down you know EU growth and enterprise is sclerotic and very uncertain

Betting on America has been a winning bet for a hundred years.

Betting on Trump is an entirely different matter - via one Tweet he derided GM for making cars overseas and persuaded Ford to abandon well develop plans to do the same. In another he's threatened Toyota with import tariffs.

He may as well have tweeted he's decided Americans will be paying more for their cars. As an investor there's a risk that such a tweet gives them the shaft or that consumers work it out and get rid of him.

Anyone exporting to the US should be sweating a bit too.

Americans in general are extremely patriotic. Given a choice. They'll purchase a home produced product. You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours. Support being mutual beneficial when it comes to trading. Easy to lose sight of, if profit is your only interest.

    I'm not convinced.

I don't have any money, but to be honest I've no idea where I'd invest it. Probably the far east. Trump is too much of a wild card (with a truly appalling track record of running anything), and I've no idea what's going to happen in the Eurozone.

I'd be more inclined to invest into certain businesses than regions though.
  • i'm sure a man who has no political experience, still runs to cry on twitter when tv shows are mean about him, admitted to sexually harassing women, has filled his cabinet with similar wealthy ceos who put profits above people, will antagonise countries with far more resources than america, and wants to cut social funding to those who need it most, will be great for a country where 99% of people are not super wealthy :)

It's patently untrue that Americans, given a choice, will buy American. Americans have plenty of opportunity to buy American produced cars, for example, but have been choosing to buy foreign produced cars.

If your theory was true Trump wouldn't need to be bullying US brands into moving production to the US and threatening import taxes on Toyota.

Consumers won't be making a choice to buy American they'll be forced to buy American and pay more for the privilege. More protectionism than patriotism.

Maybe. Capital returns over the last 10 years for the S&P500 were 59%, not too shabby. If you'd put the money into the sclerotic DAX 40 instead then you'd only have made 78%.

It's funny for someone that is so leery of predictions you seem pretty certain that Pres Trump is going to be a rip roaring success based on no evidence whatsoever. As he has never been a politician we have no idea whether he'll be good or bad at it. I hope he's a great success but I have no idea whether or not whether he will be yet you are absolutely certain of the outcome.

Is this what they call post truth politics?
  • So far, $74 million has been donated towards Trump's inauguration.
The man who organised America's last two inaugurations asks why donors' money is still coming in and wonders where it is going to go."We planned the two largest inaugurations in the history of our country and we never spent anywhere near that," said Steve Kerrigan, who led Barack Obama's 2009 and 2013 inauguration events.
"I can't imagine how they are going to spend that amount of money - and why they would even keep raising money," he said.

I didn't mention cars. My reference was in a far broader context.
