You have my sympathy with DH overspending. Mr SA used to be exactly the same, he used to drive me nuts, he didn’t give a 🤬 whether we could afford it or not.

A lot of people I know aren’t sending cards this year due to RM strikes plus high postage costs and are donating what they would’ve spent to charity instead.

Might skip some of the Christmas cards but DH will want to send one to his aunt at least as he doesn’t see her very often.

We have had hardly any this year, think a lot of people aren’t bothering due to the strikes as SA said.

SA, yes DH just sticks it on a card because he “deserves” whatever it is that’s caught his fancy at that point in time. 🙄 He has a good job but we’re just in permanent debt and can’t seem to get out of it. It’s actually ridiculous.

DD still off nursery but she’s a lot better today. Hoping she’ll be able to go to nursery tomorrow but will see how she is.

Have given the kitchen a good clean today and tidied a small cupboard. On washing number 3 now as well.

Had a terrible night with DD so kept her off again as we’re both exhausted. Need to take her with me to pick DS up so that will be fun. 😩

Have done my usual washing and hung it up and put the dry one away. Also got the marzipan on the Christmas cakes so they are now wrapped in tea towels in the cupboard to dry out. I can put the icing on next week.

Not much else done as DD is being very demanding and wants me nearby at all times. She still has a bit of a temp and not eating much.

Hopefully she’ll be better for Monday and can go back to nursery. I’m back at work on Mon & Tues on late shift then that’s me until Boxing Day.

There was snow this morning but then it rained and all washed away. It’s much warmer today at 2C but with a cold wind. Hope it’s not icy later as we live at the top of a big hill.

Hope DD feels better soon. Kids go downhill quickly but also pick up quickly so fingers crossed she’s ok for Monday.

Thanks guys, DD is a bit better today, her temperature has gone down but she’s still tired & grumpy. She slept through the night for the first time this week so at least we both got a decent rest.

Just having a lazy day with the kids, have put Home Alone on for them and they seem to be enjoying it. DH is at work but won’t be too late home. He is on annual leave after today & I only have 2 shifts to work before Christmas so we’ll have plenty of time to get organised.

We’re taking DS ice skating tomorrow, DD is too tantrum prone just now so she’s going to my mum’s.

Got the steak pie for New Year ordered & paid for at the butcher’s last week.

DD had a screaming fit from 2-4am on Sunday morning so that was fun for us all. 😭 We slept later because of that then were running about getting ready as the ice skating was booked for 11am.

So a slightly stressful start but the ice skating was a success, DS enjoyed himself and none of us fell over. 😂 DH was very wobbly but managed ok and DS nearly fell a few times but clung onto me for dear life whilst I tried to stay upright. DS did have a penguin to push for half the time but was trying to walk instead of skate and also wasn't pushing it so I had to push it with one hand for him.

We went to a cafe for lunch afterwards, DH bought a £6 hot chocolate along with a soft drink and his lunch. I asked him did he know it was £6 - "Oh I never look at the prices of things!".  And this is why we're in debt! Where is the banging head off wall emoji when you need it. 😩

We also bought cakes to take away but it was so expensive. I wish we hadn't bought the cakes, there were no prices and we ended up spending £16 on 5 cakes. 😱 We know not to do that again from that place!!

There were some reindeer in the town as well so DS got to give them a carrot stick and stroke them. He was amazed, thankfully it was free!! They were lovely. DH then took DS on a fairground ride that lasted about 3 mins and cost £3 each. So not a good spending day for us but DS had a good time.

DD back at nursery today as she is much better and she was so excited to go. 😊 I'm working late shift but will leave soon to pick some things up in town before work.

I’m glad you had a good time ice skating but eek to those prices. Our local park’s Christmas market was the same with extortionate prices in the cafe, made C0sta etc look cheap! I used to go ice skating every Saturday when I was young but absolutely no way I’d do it now with my track record of broken legs 😬Your DH sounds exactly like Mr SA was when he was younger, not a clue about prices and whether you could afford it or not.

  • I always read along with your diary but can't remember if you have talked about how you manage your money. Do you have a system like YNAB or your own alternative spreadsheets? it sounds like you really need to get a proper zero budget in place that covers all your expenditure and hopefully allows some spending money for you and your Oh. Then he can spend his money however he wants ( £6 hot chocolate comes to mind), but when it is finished there is no more till next payday.  I am sure it would take the pressure off you, of managing the finances and doing your best, only to find that your husband has been spending without you realising. Living in your overdraft is so demoralising and depressing, especially when you are paid and it doesn't even cover the amount you owe. There is always this feeling that you have no money for anything, and when you are both working hard, it is not any fun to live like that. It is definitely worth sitting down and woking out your income and expenditure to find out exactly how things stand. You know of course you will get plenty of good advice here about how to set a zero budget.
