Not buying any clothes 2017

Have a family anniversary to go to next weekend and will need something smart for 2 evening dinners. Have a lovely dress I can wear on Saturday just need to trawl through the wardrobe for Friday. I'm determined not to buy anything!!!Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0

I haven't read the whole thread as just stumbled on it this morning. I've been doing something similar, although not as extreme in one respect and more so in others. On 22nd June I committed to a year of not buying anything new. I could if I wanted to dig out everything I have bought in that time. I stumbled over Christmas as I didn't want to give people 2nd hand gifts and I also fell off the wagon at the end of November and bought 4 tops new.
It has been psychologically hard at times as I have *felt* like I needed to buy stuff, have had days where I feel all of my clothes are old and tatty. Definitely my boots are! Luckily the weather is set to change and I'll be able to bring out clothes/shoes for warmer weather so I suspect I'll feel ok again. Because I did fall off the wagon I am going to do an extra month. And at this point despite feeling my clothes are tatty I figure I've got this far I might as well see it out!
I definitely think I will get new boots/jeans and a couple of tops when the challenge ends though.
Be interesting if you guys feel the same, in that it's both hard and ridiculously easy! Don't know if I could have been as extreme as not buying ANYTHING for a year!DF as at 30/12/16

As I've openly acknowledged before, I don't actually need any more clothes or shoes. Lately I thought I was past material temptations (wants rather than needs), and by and large I have been.
Yet I bought a pair of high heeled sandals online from Schuh the other week at 70% off - fabulous but really only suitable for summer - and today somehow ended up with a pale pastel spring shawl from Tu. It was very good value at just £8 and there's no denying I will use it...but I don't actually need it. It's staying in its bag until my mum can give me a second opinion. I'm happy to gift it to her if she likes it.
Not yet decided on whether the heels will go back.
I have spent £25 on clothes and shoes for myself this year (plus quite a bit more on stuff for our toddler, which I don't begrudge at all), but only £23 if this has been unnecessary. I feel like I'm losing control

Think the only thing I have bought so far this year has been a scarf from a hospice shop for £2.99 - it's royal blue and emerald green and 'pulls together' a number of my tops and jackets. Had a girlie day out with a friend on Friday and was totally uninspired with the shoes and clothing I saw. Did have a look at a tankini in M&S but TBH £29 for the top and £15 for the knickers made me put it back on the rail. I did see a nice navy skirt in a CS but decided it was a want not a need and put that back too!
I need to pull out my summer clothes and have a 'put together' session to see what can go and if there are any gaps.Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0 -
I've made a decision: these are going back, bringing my spend down to £10.VfM4meplse wrote: »Yet I bought a pair of high heeled sandals online from Schuh the other week at 70% off - fabulous but really only suitable for summer
The jury's still out on the shawl.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

:rotfl: Me too!
So far I haven't bought anything this year but, by 'eck, it's hard. I've been to the charity shop a couple of times but have managed to scuttle in, hand over donations and scuttle back out without looking at anything. And I'm currently weighing up whether or not to splash out on a dress & shrug on offer in a mail order catalogue at half-price. The heart says yes but so far the head is winning!
Well done VfM4meplse on deciding to return the sandals - that takes some willpower!Be kind to others and to yourself too.0 -
Good work YorksLass - unfortunately I have now bought something as I had a formal and none of my dresses fit (another story) hoping it is a one off though as otherwise I have stuck to it!0

I bought myself some new nighties this month. I like to sleep in cotton long tee shirts ( even though they are so short my DDs avert their eyes when they see me:D) And my old ones are literally falling apart.
But I really struggled to find cotton replacements - everything seems to be a mixture of cotton and modal (aka viscose which is notoriously flimsy) and even if I increased the budget I was struggling to find pure cotton. Until I looked in Primark. £4.50 for just the sort of thing I was looking for, pure cotton and OK pattern
At that price it can't be produced without sweatshop labour so I agonised before buying. But I will make them last - my last ones were ten years old. So why do I feel so guilty? It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0
