At what age did you feel 'old'?

This is quite a light hearted post and I know people's replies will all be totally different which is why I was curious.

Have you reached a point in your life where you have felt old for the first time? Some people will say no but for me it was this year, I'm 37.

I think the reason for this is because we've recently employed some apprentices and one of them is nineteen and basically looks like a younger version of me so some people call him my son. I don't actually have children but it hammered home that I could legally have a nineteen year old.

When I talk to friends, family about things we've done, places we've been I find myself always saying how many years ago it was too. Another year has gone by in a flash. I've read that the older you get, the faster the time goes because you're having less new experiences. It makes some sense.

I think that the key to feeling young is to hang around with people that are older than you. I have mates that I go mountain biking with who are older than me. I did'nt feel old until these 17-19 yr old apprentices joined at work. I can't even have a conversation with them as our worlds are so different. I gave up when they said they did'nt know what Only Fools and Horses was or the A-Team

  • Not arrived at that age yet.

  • I suppose it was around age 40, but several things make me feel different from what I call the younger generation, mainly their need for 'constant connectivity': (mobile phones, internet, social media, etc)

I was mightily depressed when I hit 40 feeling it was the end of the world. Hittting every decade milestone since the I realise I was still almost a kid so it's all relative. I suppose when you have more medical appointments in your diary of various kinds than social engagements you do start to feel the tide is starting to turn against you!

Mixing with people a lot older than yourself can make your feel younger......but only until you start having to go to their funerals!
  • 30. I'm not sure if it's the cocktail of drugs that I'm on, but can't "perform" if you know what I mean wink wink. Just have to settle with satisfying me wife. As long as she's happy, I'm happy. But it still sucks :(
  • I'm 47. It hasn't happened yet.

Turning 40 was rubbish because it meant I was officially older than I considered myself. To be honest I still can't quite believe I'm over 40 and it's less than three years until I will be 50

I felt old at 40. My body seemed to agree with me. Now 49 i have more aches and pains than ever. I have had manual jobs all my life so maybe an easier job you would feel different.
I came into this world with nothing and I'm gonna leave with nothing.

    In about ten years time.

I shall be 86 next week and have much the thoughts and fancy the same things as I did many years ago.

(From the neck up I am a teenager. From the neck down a little older)
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

  • I think I'm starting to feel old as I now see icons from my childhood passing away. Luckily I haven't lost any of my close friends but I am aware that eventually this too will begin.
I had my older children at a young age (18 and 21) my son is now the age that I had him (21) He makes me laugh when he dispairs at his younger siblings behaviour.
My body feels older and I'm now aware of my limits.
However my sprit is young and I hope I never really grow out of silly behaviour and pranks.
Happy new year older folks :D

  • I am 44. My eldest is 18 and on Christmas Eve he came to the pub with us for the first time, now that made me feel old.

DH and I are starting to think about the time when it will just be the two of us again, it's quite a scary thought.

And like the OP we have a 22 yo trainee at work and its very hard not to talk to him like he is one of my kids!

I look at myself in the mirror sometimes and think that I look my age, even though I make an effort to look nice.

So yes I do feel quite old at times, although I know that 44 is no age at all really!
