Thank you CCL, Wannabe & Drawing a line...work was very busy but not at ease with everything at the moment.
I didn't dare switch the oven on this evening so instead made smoked haddock kedgeree which only involved the (separate) hob. I've looked at the price of new insert ovens and including installation, it looks to be around the £300-£350 price range.
Direct debit for the credit card went out so another £29 paid off.paydbx2025 #26 £890/£5000 . Mortgage start £148k June 23 - now £138k.

I drove home from work, trying to think about what a I could cook on the hob. I'm obviously soused to using an oven, it took some thinking! I decided to just try the ovenand see what happened given that it's now 48 hours since it stopped working. To my amazement and gratitude, it worked and heated up without tripping.:T I thought, since it was working, I'd make the most of it and got a batch of chocolate muffins and a batch of vanilla muffins made. I don't understand the physics of it, but I'm very glad it works !paydbx2025 #26 £890/£5000 . Mortgage start £148k June 23 - now £138k.

Is there something else on the same circuit as your oven? We found that putting the shower and the iron on at the same time used to throw the fuse!
It may also be worth looking at replacing the element yourself if that's what's causing the problem. It's not nearly as difficult as I thought, though a second pair of hands comes in useful to get everything into place.
I hope work starts to look up, it's horrible having that hanging over you.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

Thank you Cherryfudge...there appear to be two ring mains, hence half the house having electricity and half not but what is on which, I'm pretty clueless. Yesterday I did check on the boiler and found that it is completely dead, as in no lights to even tell you it's locked out. I'm wondering if the boiler is on the same ring main and perhaps some sort of fuse has gone. Or rather I'm clutching at that hope and praying we don't need a whole new boiler.
A busy week at work and glad to have made it to the end of the week. Hoping to catch up with a friend on Friday, then wait for the engineer in the afternoon.
DD2 has to make crab bisque tomorrow... it's a great course, I'm learning so much from her :rotfl:.paydbx2025 #26 £890/£5000 . Mortgage start £148k June 23 - now £138k.

Hope you get down to the boiler and cooker problems without it being a huge expense

It certainly sounds as if a fuse could be the cause of two things going at once.
Crab bisque! I'm envious!I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)

I had my day off today and met a friend for coffee. I was able to have a good chat to her about work ( we used to work together many years ago) and it was helpful to get her perspective and advice. Much to think about.
The boiler man came...and told me he'd not seen a boiler like ours, for years. Apparently the company which made it, no longer exists and parts are nearly impossible to get, so he recommended a new boiler. I have no idea how much it will cost, other than it will be in the thousands rather than the hundreds. I certainly don't have that kind of money in savings. My first thought is, for the short term, to invest in a couple of portable oil radiators. The girl's rooms are fine as they have electric panel heaters but mine and the boys room could do with more heat. Will need to consider cost implications further.paydbx2025 #26 £890/£5000 . Oh no, that's not what anyone wanted to hear! First step, hot water bottles, I guess. Oil filled radiators sound like a feasible option, though you could try to get hold of parts for the boiler.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)
