This year, a good friend I was visiting got me 6 different bottles of chilli sauce. A very thoughtful present as he knows I love chilli and he purposely found me varieties from different regions to try. Unfortunately he didn't consider my luggage allowance for flying home again - I could barely pick my stocking up!
  • Anything that is packaged and sold as a 'Gift Set' - having broken a couple of nails a few years back trying to extricate giant Bayliss & Harding bottles from their moorings only to discover that the glue dots will remain permanently welded to the bottles for the full duration of their use, I've since vowed never ever to inflict this on anyone else...

Anything that comes with a long explanation from the donor - if it needs that much explaining, it probably wasn't that good an idea to begin with...

Home made hampers containing random cheap items that just don't belong together - eg onion marmalade and shower gel...

But probably the worst gift is the absent one, the one you're told about on The Day that they haven't quite got around to getting yet, which in due course moves to the 'Unmentioned even 10 Days Later' category.... :D

.....this Christmas I am now the proud owner of a big Yardley gift set! I have sulked ever since! To me Yardley is outdated and synonymous with old ladies and something I wouldn't choose for myself....!

Oh i must be OLD !!! I love Yardley soap and lavender water. Reminds me of the time whenI was sick as a child and my mum would put a few drops of her precious lavender water on my pillow at night to soothe me and help me sleep". Special memories!
  • A cardboard card reading 'WET PAINT'. Why? Because I'd just FINISHED the decorating.
  • MIL one year waited until gifts were all being opened and in the chaos drops gift tag but no gift in the pile. Took hours before it was spotted.

My mother-in-law got me a pair of pyjamas. I am 6 months pregnant (which of course she knows) and they aren't maternity ones so I can't wear them for some time, plus I now feel like even more of a whale than I did before - Thanks!

Given that you will only be pregnant for another 3 months, she was perhaps thinking that you might like to wear the pyjamas for a bit longer than 3 months, and then bin them once the baby is born ... Non-maternity pyjamas would therefore be much more sensible and useful since they could be used for far far longer after the baby has been born.

She must be thinking ahead to all those times you'll be up in the middle of the night with a young baby!

A box of M&S serviettes that are prefolded to sit like a star - no idea what I'll ever use them for, we don't host dinner parties or anything like that.

Box of ferrero rocher, I'm severely allergic to hazelnuts so literally a killer gift (i swapped with my sister who had a box of mint chocolates she doesn't particularly like).
