Box of ferrero rocher, I'm severely allergic to hazelnuts so literally a killer gift (i swapped with my sister who had a box of mint chocolates she doesn't particularly like).

Not trying to tell you something then?

I must admit - I think food presents (of any description) are something one has to know the person concerned very well before thinking of.

In my case - I've tended to pass on boxes of chocolates to whoever I came across first after getting them.

    Why bother?

Anyone buying food stuff for me would be expected to know the way I eat very well - well that's no sweet goodies with sugar, g*netically-modified stuff, palm oil, white flour, chemicals in then. Milk - is it organic? Eggs - are they freerange? It's actually rather hard to get anything sweet that matches my "food criteria" - so I'd rather they didn't bother...
  • Just seen this on facebook about a japanese man who makes hats for his cats from the hair they've shed. As a new user i can't post the link but it's on The Poke site.

My GF got a pack of 500 sheets of A4 paper from her mum.
  • Actually - by now ...and reading all these experiences of just how thoughtless some "givers" can be and I'm all for the idea of "alternative gifts". That being giving someone a card in which you've written words like "I promise the bearer of this card........" and then go on to list help with a task they would like

    - eg an evening of babysitting, a free haircut, several hours of housework done for them, some gardening done for them, etc.

I know I'd certainly smile if a competent handyperson handed me one, for instance, saying "Three hours of my time for any DIY you need doing". I'd react to that by thinking "Great:T" and start working out the list. Now that really would be appreciated.

Mind you - I'd also be glad (if not as glad - as I could do it myself but just don't want to) if a card said "Three hours of your housework done for you" and I'd start listing off "clean kitchen, clean bathroom, hoover, iron":D

My OH received a 'Santakini' (think the Borat mankini...but in Christmas theme) from his SISTER!!

I received a poo emoji lollipop, from the same sister.

She said that she didn't have a lot of money this year (which is understandable as she has a 1 year old baby) so she just wanted to get us something small.

I'd much rather she didn't get us anything at all...because as ungrateful as it sounds - I am now stuck with items I don't even think I could sell at a car boot!!!

I've had some unbelievable presents through the years, some made me laugh, some made me cry and an awful lot were a waste of some ones money.

However, all these strange gifts were given by friends or family whom I loved dearly and I know that just for a moment they were thinking of me and for whatever reason decided that they must give me something.
I may not have loved the gift but in most cases I loved the giver.

I hope that I always thanked them with warmth and appreciation no matter how I felt about the inappropriate gift. Believe me, teachers get a lot of practise at this.

Of course, if I felt that the gift was deliberately insulting (has happened once), then the warmth and appreciation was over the top effusive. It's called 'killing with kindness.'

You see I'm not so nice really.

Perhaps it's a subtle hint she should write home more often?

    I got nothing.

But that was because I want nothing. I have everything I need right now. Lucky me.

I neither give nor receive Christmas gifts anymore by mutual agreement. Only to four young under 18s. N+Ns. After that it's all over. Well..... not really but for Christmas certainly and they grin and bear it with a big grin lol. So they no longer have to buy (get their parents lol) to buy me stuff I don't need either. Win win.

But I give lots of hugs and birthday pressies!

Myself and OH have a few nice days away in January instead of buying crap pressies for each other too.

But each to their own and all that.

I am saving the planet here. No trekking to town/shopping centre, no wrapping paper/gift bag. No stress.

I buy the kiddies stuff online in October.

But I am probably alone. Sorry about that.
