Incredible isn't it, you don't realise how much you rely on your arm until you break it. Even the simplest thing is such hard work. Another thing I didn't expect, it absolutely knocked me for six, I was so physically and mentally exhausted for about 10 days, I think from a mixture of the trauma and my body trying to heal itself.

It will get easier, I can promise you that, little by little you'll be able to do more and the pain will get much better.

I did type a message however the browser refreshed and i lost it. I suspect this version will be shorter as my fingers are starting to hurt (Left Hand).

I now have the cast off, Yey!. I can now wash that stinking arm which is some relief. I am able to maintain the angle required, and can remain in a sling :). Sadly i have absolutely no strength in the arm, i cant open things....even door handles. At times ive been a bit naughty and wander around the house without a sling. As i am typing this now, i have my laptop on the dining table, and both arms out straight (left is straight ish) with the table as support. I have to roll my shoulder to wash my hands and usually involves rubbing soap & hand against the side of the sink. Sleeping is a bit awful, i tend to give a little "cry out" when i'm moving it in bed. Having a shower is a bit weird...

I am a big runner, i use it to keep the weight off. I planned to run 5-6 miles every day over Christmas to keep things flowing through the body. To compensate for this i took the dog out for a 7 mile walk on Weds, its been icy on Thurs/Friday therefore i'm stuck in the house. I can do simple stuff like load the dishwasher/washing etc. I just cant take the washing upstairs, i have to load it into a rucksack.

Can i scratch my bum? Yes.

What do i do for work? I manage things, sometimes from A to C, without going via B. Well thats my aim... do less...get paid more ;)

You shouldn't drive with a broken arm, how the heck will you answer the phone or send a txt . . .
Or put make-up on, or shave ...

I'm interested in this discussion. I tore a tendon in my right shoulder last year and I'm told it won't heal without an operation that will keep me off work for six weeks. I have assumed that I wouldn't be able to drive for six weeks as well. (Car is an auto, but being a Merc it has the indicator on the right of the wheel.) I'm still considering whether to have it done, as it will mean a big loss of pay.

Is there no way you could get a lift / taxi / bus / train to get to work? I broke my thumb, only a small chip but enough that A&E at the weekend stuck me in a cast halfway up my arm, no way I could drive even after 2 weeks when they replaced it with a hand cast as I couldn't grip properly. I got the train and walked 20 minutes with the odd lift from the station from colleagues

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Rural Wales, so no public transport link, and a taxi would cost ~£40 a day. No-one likely to want to give me a lift at 5 am, either! The most realistic option is to cycle it (I did this most of last year) but with one arm in pot I'm not sure if that is feasible. The point is that the medical advice is 'no work for six weeks', not 'take it easy for a while'. I work in security, and the job can be quite physical. I have explored the possibility of coming back early with our HR people, and they say it might be possible to have me back on reduced duties if I wanted to get back before the six weeks was up, but they would need a doctor's letter saying I was fit for work. I'm still exploring options, so thanks for your input.
