Even with an auto, can someone explain how one would operate the indicators, change into reverse or neutral and steer, some of which at the same time with just one arm?

Even in a manual I tend to select reverse when stationary and I don't dry steer. An auto will only need neutral on the move if it starts to skid.

Could you perform an emergency stop safely with one hand ?

Can someone give you a lift to and from work? When a colleague broke his leg the office manager arranged for someone from work to go and collect him in the morning and take him home at the end of the day.

Admittedly it was my right arm but I managed perfectly well to have two hands on the steering wheel with a broken arm in a cast, I can't imagine why folks think you wouldn't. You only wear a sling for the first day, after that you're encouraged to use your arm as normal as much as you possibly can.

It's moving the gear stick on a manual that would be tricky as your grip is weakened, not a problem in an auto where you only move the gear stick when stationary.

"The following examples of circumstances that are likely to be characterised as dangerous driving are derived from decided cases and the SGC Definitive Guideline:
driving when knowingly suffering from a medical or physical condition that significantly and dangerously impairs the offenders driving skills
such as having an arm or leg in plaster, or impaired eyesight. It can include the failure to take prescribed medication"

Wow, so the whole time you were in plaster. Glad my consultant was more realistic.
