Hi all,
As the title suggests, what are the chances of appealing a declined credit card application? Has anybody ever successfully managed to do this?
Cheers

You can try....and some have succeeded.
You aren't entitled to credit though.
Lenders have specific criteria and you probably just didn't match it.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Budgeting & Bank Accounts, Credit Cards, Credit File & Ratings and Energy boards. Usually minds are already made up but no harm in trying0

On what grounds? Do you have evidence that their decision has been made on inaccurate data for example?0

I would say from own experience that you have a very low chance if it is a generic credit score rejection but if it's specific in my case affordability then if you show you can afford the card then you may be successful I was with Tesco bank.

I've had finance and phone contracts declined and had them over turned.0

You'd generally need to tell them something they don't already know about you.
But bearing in mind you've already told them where you live, where you work, how 'stable' (time with bank/in job/at address) you are, how much you earn, your marital status, how much your spouse earns (via the application form)...and they know how much you owe, how many credit accounts you have, how you manage them, and the same for any spouse (from their CRA search)...what do you think you could add to that fairly extensive set of data?
I would say no harm in trying, but there is...it's possibly another credit search...which might be better reserved for another provider who may have a different customer profile requirement.0 -
I've just had my appeal approved by natwest.
Had to send in bank & credit cards statements.
I used bits from this template https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/16123330 -
DO IT! I appealed a Barclaycard Initial decision and they then gave me a £1200 limit (max available for that card) and I also did the same with Tesco Foundation and they gave me £250.
Always better to appeal than apply elsewhere and run the risk of another hard search0 -
IMO, the computer application process is very clunky and most never find out at which point you tripped up or perhaps not enough information is readily available to the computer system. We can only guess. Hence the best way to maximise a search is to send the underwriters an appeal letter with your statutory credit report, evidence of addresses, good credit history etc etc. It's always worth a try to break this vicious cycle.
I managed to get a successful appeal for the Clarity. In my case I reckon it was either a problem with the system not recognising one of address or relatively minimal history. (Just a guess)
