The point I was making, and clearly I've not explained it correctly, is that your sky box doesn't use your internet connection to send usage data, viewing habits etc. Yes there was a contractual requirement to have a phone line connected because of the reasons I've explained but that used to dial up (and granted possibly use it's own modem) to connect to the Sky servers and report it's location. It was never there to "reap data" as the other poster had stated.

I remember driving a van, possibly Renault Trafic, by design, the intermittent wipers would stop when you applied the handbrake.
That saved a bit of fuel. :D

Nah. That might be what Renault told you but in reality it was just the usual dodgy French electrics :D

I run my router on my 12 volt solar system ,it draws about an amp at 12.8 volts so 12 watts . A wall wart PSU is probably 60% efficient so it is like leaving a 20 watt device on 24/7.

According to Sky the box needs to be connected to broadband

    https://www.sky.com/help/articles/record-to-your-sky-box-wherever-you-are

When I used to have Sky the BB connection was removed the moment the installer left.

Everything worked perfectly and the main reason for it seemed to be billing for the pay on demand stuff and payed for sporting events, none of which I ever used.

Things may have changed but a friend who has Sky doesn't have his box connected and has no issues but like me never uses any of the pay for stuff over and above the subscription.

A good approximation for the cost of leaving something on is £1 per watt per year.

On your estimate which I think is reasonable although I suspect modern wall warts are more efficient as they rarely run hot the saving by turning off overnight is ~ £10pa If you consider that a worthwhile saving then the obvious solution would be to blow the first years saving on a timer (I'm not sure what they cost to run though).

Yep, so 12w will take 83 hours to use 1 unit (1kWH) of electricity, at about 15p. Or about a unit every fortnight.

Better to switch the TV, monitor, lights off when you leave the room to make a cuppa.

I leave my router on all the time but I'm always sure to switch off my IT consultant every night.
  • Something no one has yet mentioned (I don't think) but which I picked up whilst surfing is that if you leave the router on continuously you keep the same ip address where-as if you turn it off you are issued with a different one. This was alleged to make you more vulnerable to hackers.

I suppose the tech-savvy on here use VPN's or go incognito so it is not a problem. But what about the non-tech savvy. Would it be a problem for them.

Just thought I would light the fuse and then retire to a safe distance. :rotfl:
