Something no one has yet mentioned (I don't think) but which I picked up whilst surfing is that if you leave the router on continuously you keep the same ip address where-as if you turn it off you are issued with a different one. This was alleged to make you more vulnerable to hackers.

I suppose the tech-savvy on here use VPN's or go incognito so it is not a problem. But what about the non-tech savvy. Would it be a problem for them.

Just thought I would light the fuse and then retire to a safe distance. :rotfl:

We can't answer the IT Consultant and he was turned off at bedtime by Al.

With fibre - you are given a IP lease for a specific period of several weeks / months - so whether you reboot the router makes no difference to that..

^^ As above except it applies not just to fibre.
Also, when you power cycle your router, you may get a different INTERNAL ip address too.

Neither of these situations makes you any more or less vulnerable to hackers though.

I've seen cases in which when the router is turned off and back on again, devices joining the network get the same IP number as devices already on the network. It's hard to avoid if the DHCP leases aren't saved persistently: issue device #1 with 192.168.0.2, power cycle router, device #1 still has 192.168.0.2, device #2 comes along and gets the first available IP number, which is 192.168.0.2. It's relatively easy to sort out, as rebooting the devices which aren't working will get them fresh leases, and a lot of devices these days re-request a DHCP lease when they see the wireless go away and come back, which will usually be the case if the router is rebooted. Pain, though.

Depends on the ISP and what is included or what you are paying for.

My ISP provides a static IP and I have had the same address for three years. This is requirement for me as I run various servers here.

The DHCP lease time also varies from one ISP to another. I know of one that will lease a different IP when a router has been down for just a couple of minutes. Maybe they don't have many IPv4 addresses in reserve.

I'm on FTTP with Zen and they include one static IP with all of their offerings, ADSL, FTTC and FTTP. I think they charge about £5 per month if you need five.

Before they were bought by Sky, I used to be with BE. I had a static IP address with them (for no extra cost) on their ADSL2+ offering.

Just had a look at my router to check how many fixed IP addresses I have and the answer is:

    18,446,744,073,709,551,632

    made up of:

    18,446,744,073,709,551,616 fixed ipv6 adresses
    16 fixed ipv4 adresses

i have certainly never been charged extra for them though.

Nah. That might be what Renault told you but in reality it was just the usual dodgy French electrics :D
French electrics bad? You've obviously never had anything to do with 1970's FIAT, Alfa or Lancia.:D
I should have also said that they started again when you released the handbrake. :)
That was/is a good van, reliable and just kept going, unlike the smaller Partner, that was a pita.

Same here when with O2, 12months with same address, renegotiated, they sent out new router, different address, which stayed the same for about more 2 years, when Sky took over.
    Move along, nothing to see.
