Ex-Motability cars can be a minefield. Some are driven by a pensioner who garages it at night and looks after it like his own car. Others treat them like the family pool car with multiple drivers and don't give a monkeys about what abuse it takes.

Is your opinion based upon experience, or just another Daily Fail headline? You should know this:
    * Only one other person is allowed to be insured to drive the Motability car, usually a family member. Only in very exceptional circumstances can another driver be a Named driver. A copy of their driving licence must be sent to the RSA insurer, along with a form that has to be completed and signed by the driver and Named driver. Only when an enquiry has been carried out regarding the Named driver, will permission be granted.

    * Motability rewards drivers who hand over the car at the end of lease, in good condition, with a cheque. I think this is currently £250. So it pays to keep them in good condition.

    * If the car is in really bad condition at the end of lease, it is possible that Motability will not extend another lease to that driver.

I have been fortunate enough to have my life blessed by a Motability car since 1995. I thank the Motability service for this: without it, I would be totally stuck. You had no idea about the above facts, did you? Still, why let facts get in the way of a biased opinion?

That just sounds like your describing any second hand car, you could easily replace the term "Ex-Motability" with "Second Hand" and it would be just as correct.

Doesn't stop other family members hopping in and driving it whether they are named or not. Just like driving a mate's car under the DOC extension of my insurance. Yes that may be forbidden under Motability but doesn't stop folk doing it.

A lad at work drives his mother's motability car every day to get to work and back. Now when that car is passed on to a used car dealer it will be sold as "one lady owner" which is further from the truth isn't it.

Yep. Ex-Motability doesn't make it any better than any other second hand car.

My village is near Louth. On the main road leading into town, is a garage which sells nothing but ex-Motability cars. They have a very good business and word of mouth brings a great deal of repeat sales. Does anyone seriously believe that such a business would thrive, if its cars were not in good condition?

OP, if you send back this car, you may be missing a reliable car which will give you a good few years of trouble-free motoring. They are regularly serviced at a main dealer, any tyres needed are fitted. Any damage is professionally and correctly repaired. Towards the end of lease, a final service and MOT is carried out.

These are certanties. No dealership is given Motability accreditation, unless closely inspected and certified by professional bodies. Can you say that about a car from the independent garage down the road?

You have listened to gossip and rumour from sources which are unaware of the real facts.

    They've decided to keep it.

No, it will be sold as one previous keeper, motability finance.

The situation you describe is no different to other drivers of cars for which they are not insured to drive. Have you not considered that "A lad at work" may be the Named driver of that car? He would still be out of order, as he should be carrying his mother, but do you know he is not a Named driver? Have you actually seen an ex-Motability car on a forecourt? Did you know that the selling garage has to be certified by Motability?

Just more disregarded facts, in line with your first post. Why comment about things that you have no actual, personal knowledge?

just like any other car on the road

Don't get smart. When the dealer discovers that the Motability lease belonged to a woman he will advertise it as "one lady owner".
