Thanks BeenThroughItAll - confirming that OP did have to suffer the inconvenience of form-filling in the Post Office to get the tax class changed, and perhaps not being able to drive the car for a few days. I don't consider it a big inconvenience in the grand scheme of things, but it certainly would have been nice for the dealer to inform - I don't know how many people on here would think to ask - I wouldn't.
My advice is still to suck it up though...

We have stuck with it, purely as it was too much hassle to do anything else. When I looked on the DVLA website about changing the Tax Class of a vehicle it implied that it took 10 working days for that to change over and although it did say the car could be driven during that time, it did not make it clear if that applied to a new owner or not.

I have to say some of you did seem to give rather rude and abrupt replies to what I think was just a question many people with no knowledge of Motobility might ask. Yes the car is a Mercedes but I don't see that it being a premium brand is relevant and as my own husband had to stop working due to disability I am not at all sure why I'm being treated as though I am in any way against someone having a disability.

Is Mercedes a premium brand? Don't they just mass produce them sell them to fleets, finance them to individuals just the same as any other run of the mill car manufacturer.

Yes in that you will pay significantly more for a merc that the "equivalent" mainstream brand

For example our merc a45 was £45k list whereas a focus rs is around the £30k mark.

    It is the stereotype.

In The Olden Days, cars were advertised as "one lady owner" then a stereotype appeared that meant you wouldn't touch 'em with a barge pole.

When I bought my ex-motability car (who else buys small automatics?) it was right at the tail end of the "nice" stereotype that they were looked after.

Now the stereotype of a motorbility owner is very negative indeed.

Doesn't change the fact that there are good 'uns and bad 'uns though, same as any other car that someone is getting rid of, there is always something wrong with it or they would keep it.

Crikey, I don't see why! My husband's is loved and cared for as if it were his own. When he goes to the Spar shop a few hundred metres away, he takes the l o n g route so that the Diesel Particulate Filter doesn't clog. (And I mean the long route.) The rear parcel area is entirely covered with a bespoke canvas covering which flops over the rear bumper so that the dog, on the 4 or 5 occasions per year that she is in the car, does not scratch anything or shed fur. Please don't generalise too much.

And furthermore the OP's comment that they are bought cheaply is nonsense. I tried to buy our first one after the lease was up for my use, but it was too pricey!

A stereotype need not accurately reflect reality, it is what a lot of people think.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

  • Ex-Motability cars can be a minefield. Some are driven by a pensioner who garages it at night and looks after it like his own car. Others treat them like the family pool car with multiple drivers and don't give a monkeys about what abuse it takes.
