Completely off topic in a way, but in Donnie Darko, theres a scene which I agreed with Donnie at the time, the whole love/fear scene in the school, and while donnie has a point, people do operate within those 2 modes, the successful seem to love what they do, the others seem to fear failure.

    I love that film lol

then there's those who just don't give a %&$* lol... those pre-LBM people living up to a lifestyle way over their means.

I just like the thought of being able maybe to have a holiday one day without worrying about going over my overdraft limit with just the deposit!

Also, my parents have never paid a penny of interest to anyone (apart from mortgage) in their lives, despite having three cards, a catalogue, and a car on hire purchase (0%) so I kind of feel i need to live up to that....

  • Since I'm single and without children my reasons are fairly selfish sounding (sorry) but for me the best thing about making myself debt free is being able to go shopping and spend £100 on Dior make up without the guilty feeling of 'now how do I pay for it'. My bills are paid, I'm not in debt, so why can't I spend on me?

But also I look forward to the security of having savings and being able to enjoy life as I haven't before. I'm just back from my first holiday abroad and 12 hours after landing picked up a brochure to look into holidays for next year.
  • Iwant to be debt free so that I can start enjoying my life again and be able to things that I used to just take for granted and think of as being normal like going on holiday or even going for a few drinks after work without having to worry about the consequences of spending £10.00 will have later on in the month and most of all I want back the security and peace of mind that I know being financially stable brings you.

  • Most of my debts are to do with my flat now, either paying for solicitors or for things related to it. I am sick of having no money left over from my wages to save or to buy a few treats or to put towards a newer car or a holiday and being honest I am scared silly that some emergency will happen and I will need to borrow more money (ie boiler or car dies).

I need to pay off these debts so I can pay off my mortgage so eventually I will have the security I crave.

I will be paying off my smallest credit card on payday and I cant tell you how much I have been smiling about that! Hopefully by the 1st of August next year (at the latest) the other cc and OD will be gone (although might be a lot sooner as my OH is trying to get me some temping work for three months at his office which I can do for a few hours in the evenings which will help a lot). On pay day my total debt will just be under 170k and thats a lot for one person to owe! It gives me a lot of stress and I cant wait to hit each 1k barrier! I might make a chart like Hypno was doing and maybe that will help motivate me!

  • Maybe I'm bored.. who knows.. but I'm sat here pondering why we want to be debt free...
Sounds an obvious question but when you think about it (Really hard.. til your brain hurts.. :p ) it's really not so...

I mean the world REVOLVES around debt.. you need debt to have a house.... left right and centre everyone is offering you credit cards... car loans.. home improvement loans.... over drafts....

What makes you want to escape all of that and say 'Well no I don't want to be sucked into it and I'll do just fine without thanks!'

I think for us it boils down to the following..
    • Sick of having no money
    • Sick of scrimping and saving for basic things
    • Want to enjoy what money we don't have and not worry
    • Want financial security for our children
    How about everyone else?

You have just said it for me, thats exactly why I want to be debt free, I am sick of having no money and saying no no no all the time!

  • Basically, I want to be debt free for the following reason. I have a job that I dont like but cannot change because of the high salary I am earning. I need the salary to pay for my debts. I earn a good salary because of the long shifts and the dangers associated with the job that I do. I earn approximately double the average earnings for the area that I live in. If I was debt free, I could afford to leave the job I am in and do something more enjoyable with more reasonable hours and conditions.

I WANT TO BE DEBT FREE - I WILL DO IT!!!!!!!!
  • Since the age of 21 when I got my first credit card, forty years ago or so, I have been in debt. My ex-husband was an actor, so the money coming in was sporadic and we lived on the breadline with two children. As a divorcee it was great to have my own money even if only benefits (augmented by a bit of waitressing cash-in-hand). But somehow the c/c debt never went away. I now have a decent wage and no mortgage and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel - under £2000 of c/c debt to pay off. I can SAVE for life on a basic pension. I'll never be rich, but it will be nice to buy stuff without feeling guilty.

What makes you WANT to be debt free?

I guess freedom and the security of knowing that my outgoings are smaller and that if my job comes to an end then I could afford to do something I WANT to do not what I have to do to pay the bills!! Also if I am lucky enought to have kids at some point then that I am finantially stable then.

Oh and so I can afford to do the work needing to be done in my flat!

I would also love to go somewhere amazing on holiday each year (using savings!) and enjoy my life and have some (more) control over it not just floating through life just existing IYSWIM
