All these references to fibre aren't actually fibre. They're fibre to the cabinet and then VDSL2 from there to your home, over copper.

It appears that very few of the 'general public' understand this and believe that fibre goes all the way to the house.
But what is more concerning and surprising is how many broadband support staff do not understand this either.

    - I had a BT Openreach engineer who visited me in the summer say that fibre was coming to our cabinet in the autumn and we would get faster speeds (despite being 4km from the cabinet)

    - then a talktalk network team member told an Openreach engineer, calling from my house about a speed drop, that at 7KM from the exchange and 4km from the cabinet I could not get anything faster (even though I had been getting faster for the previous 2 years) - then he proceeded to suggest I pay extra for fibre if I wanted faster speeds !!!!

I get a 76Mbps connection on my FTTC connection - measured regularly using Speedtest.com
I live 1/2 mile from the exchange and 75yards from the cabinet !!

At 0.06km from the cabinet I would expect you to get good speeds - although 76MB does seem exceptional.

I'm with TalkTalk. My 18-month contract has expired and the monthly payments are creeping up towards £45! I want to save money and get faster Internet (have just run a test and my download speed over normal phone line is just 2.5 MB, though I am using a wireless connection).

    I have a few questions:

    1) Will going for their fibre options ('up to' 38 MB or 'up to' 76 MB) be genuinely faster? And significantly faster? Will the fact that I'm using a wireless network (with a range extender) hamper that increase in speed (or negate it completely)?

    2) How much can you haggle them down? I'm not averse to switching provider. I haggled with one agent a couple of days ago, got down to around £32/month for unlimited broadband on their 38 MB fibre deal, with unlimited anytime UK calls and international calls Extra. I then spoke to them today and got offered £32/month for the same package minus the fibre! So it sounds like each agent just makes it up as they go along. I want a genuinely competitive deal.

I've been with TalkTalk for years. It doesn't seem that long ago I was paying around £21/month including line rental and boosts!
Going back to the OP - Yes Fibre will make a significant improvement to your speed
It will also cost you less than the £45 that you are currently paying - how did they manage to get that figure ?
unlimited ADSL with TT currently costs £22.95 inc line rental and VAT !!
Which, is virtually half what you pay !!
Unlimited phone calls package costs £5
Upgrade to 38Mbps (max) fibre for an extra £6 per month
I know what I would be doing !!
They are not as "haggleable" as they once were - but if you are out of your minimum contract period, it is worth a go...........
  • I was offered £30 for 38mbps inc free unlimited calls and FREE connection to fibre instead of £25.
Did the 76mbps for £28.75 inc free connection?

Yes - for me - it was free !!
  • I had a chat with Jennifer from Loyalty team and said the very best offer they can do for me is

    Broadband to 38mb for £25pm
    Unlimited calls for £5pm
    Waiver £25 fibre connection fee.

Said, not possible to get 76mb, free calls, free connection for £28.75, nobody would be offered this, even to talktalk customers from day one...
