Might be that OP did something "wrong" much earlier, most drivers these days don't have the balls to do anything at the time, they wait instead until your turning off.

  • I've had the same scenario happen to me a few times, and I'm semi lead footed. One time I at least knew why - the guy behind me was looking intently on his rear view instead of looking directly ahead...

It is important...... The supermarkets will run out of milk, bread and baked beans prior to the Christmas nuclear fallout. You should go NOW and fill 2 large trolleys with the above mentioned items.

This was something that used to happen to me when I lived in London. Didn't see it round here until recently.

Basically, you want to turn left off a busy 30mph single carriageway road. You indicate in plenty of time then slow down gradually. Perfectly normal as you can't make a 90 degree turn at 30mph.

In the meantime, the driver behind decides to sound their horn, maybe flash their lights then overtake aggressively.

I checked my indicators are working, which they are.

Seriously don't see what their problem is. That they were delayed on their journey by 15 seconds by someone wanting to turn left!

Don't worry about it. Just stop your car, lean out of the window, and ask the driver behind what the problem is. Chuckle in amusement at their hand gestures. Shrug as if you have no idea what they're trying to say, then very slowly continue on your way.

Maybe these people will learn to be more patient in future.

Perfectly normal if you are cornering sensibly I'm afraid. Not especially common, but does happen. Sounds like it is probably an urban road, or at least one where the corner is sharp and probably fairly blind into the new road?

The problem is that most people brake late and corner too quickly.

The deciding factor for most drivers is the speed they can physically get the car around the corner. It should be whether they can stop easily on their side of the road in the distance they can see to be clear and can reasonably expect to remain clear. That is often 5-10mph (or even more) less than the safe speed based on the corner geometry.

In terms of timing of the braking, watch cars turning in from behind. For most you'll see the brake lights go out after they are turning (and you can bet your life they are still changing gear if it was needed) - usually about the time the indicator goes on (if it does :)). To maximise redundancy, and therefore ability to deal with the unforeseen you should be completing your braking, and any gear change (including releasing the clutch) before you move the steering wheel.

Sounds to me OP like you are doing it well. Trouble is 90% don't leave enough margin in their driving. If even only 1 in 1000 of these gets irritable when 'held up' by someone driving with sensible margins, you can expect occasional aggro.

Yeah, it happens to me occasionally. I do a lot of driving around housing estates in London, during the day. The flats/houses are densely packed and the tiny roads between them are full of parked cars. I have to slow right down to make sure that I can see around the corner before I turn, in case anyone else is coming out of the turning, there often isn't room for more than one vehicle. And I have to be especially careful at school run time or during the holidays when the little kids step out into the road, seemingly from nowhere. And yes, I do have indicators and I do use them!

But it won't stop the impatient !!!!!s who drive up my backside and immediately beep at me because I have the cheek to slow down before turning. I just wave my arms in the universal gesture of self-abuse and yell profanities out of the window at them.

The other day, I had a black cab driver beeping frantically and waving at me as I pulled into a parking space on the road. First thought....my car is on fire/I've run over a cat or kid. Turns out that he knew me (I didn't recognise him but I pretended that I did) and he just stopped for a chat. !!!!!!, he nearly gave me a bloody heart attack, those black cab horns are loud!

We've got a few roads like that. Cars parked either side make it blind and single car can pass. If there's an oncoming car your bum overhangs the road whilst you wait for said car to move.

Sounds like your in similar situation crawling round the corner.

Raise two fingers if it makes you feel better and get on with life!

10-15 seconds is fine to me, indicate and ease off accelerator to slow down to avoid wearing brakes unnecessarily then brake if needed

Same people who go mental at cyclists for slowing them for 10-30 seconds and don't think anything of sitting in traffic for 5 minutes

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
