good idea another idea i got is that sydney was a stone mason worked for himself just wonder if there was a guild of stone masons??

I've got no ideal abt that, thats where rootschat somes in handy, but you could try the trade directories, these are held at libraires, or theres this on one online:

    http://www.historicaldirectories.org/

    it goes up to 1919.

Inside me lives a skinny woman crying to get out - but I can usually shut her up with cake!
  • Name:Violet Louisa RandallYear of Registration:1891 Quarter of Registration:Jan-Feb-Mar DISTRICT:Camberwell (1837-1919) County:London, Surrey Volume:1d Page:928

You will need to go here http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/births/obtainingbirthcertificates/index.asp

Order her birth cert, this will give you both parents names.
Don't forget to use the Volume and Page numbers, and this will save you money. It costs £7 with this information, £10 without it.
The cert can take upto 2 weeks to come through, but generally takes 7-10 days.

If you need any guidance just give me a shout, I'm already pm'ed you with my email address shold you need it.

I've looked in the census for 1901 and haven't found her using the name Violet, but have found a Louisa Randall who was born in London, but living in Staffordshire. It looks like a children's home.

Address is St Margaret's Home, Clay Street, Penkridge, Staffordshire.

It may not be the correct one, but best to send for cert to be sure, as there a couple wh are dated to be born 1889 and the census are not always correct about years of birth.
Knowing the parent's names, will be the best sure fire way of finding them.

    Hope this helps.

  • Sydney is a little more difficult to find. Without knowing where he was from it is hard to pinpoint him.

From the details I have for him, there is only one birth of a Sydney Christoper Smith and that was 1879, 6 years difference from the date you have given.
However the census tell another story. Please bear in mind that I am only looking in London at this time as they married in Lambeth which I found, but you already have the cert you say.

    Just incase...

If you haven't already got this cert, use the previous link again to order it. Again this cert wil cost only £7 with the reference numbers displayed above. (1d 622)
This will give you both father's of them both.
You can possibly compare it to the birth to make sure they match.
I have had different first names for the same person, (ie marriage cert said said he's father was George Foster and the birth cert said Sydney Foster - still working on that).

Hi everyone, I have just found you I am so glad thanks for the info I will start putting it to good use. I want to do quite a lot starting with my paternal line and then the maternal and then my husbands lot. I think Ancestry.uk is costly, and what happened to the free sites advertised on TV?

most of the free work can be done with Freebmd (births/deaths marraiges ) , Freecen (census) , Freereg (parish registers) and familysearch. As others have said the local archive centre or libraries often have freeaccess to Ancestry or the http://www.thegenealogist.co.uk/ .

I tend to do all the legwork on the free sites and only used the paid for ones when needed ( or sign up for the free 3 day trial on ancestry with one of my many email addresses)
