Enormous fine for untaxed vehicle

One of the positive advantages would be that foreign registered lorries (and cars) would need to pay their share if they refuelled here.
Many HGVs cross the channel with the tanks - and belly-tanks on the trailers - full, so that they can run on cheaper French or Belgian diesel. They don't fuel here or, if they do, minimally, returning across the channel near-empty.At the moment we cannot charge them VED.

I know it was my fault for completely having forgotten to tax my car! But I've been fined £362 for it. (Plus to pay the tax)
I feel like the crime doesn't meet the punishment, it's far too much than what I can afford.
Do I have any options?
Tia
If like me you have more than one car and one no longer has tax discs it is quite easy to forget when the tax is due, I decided to go onto direct debit.
Like others have said you would have been sent a reminder assuming your current address is correct at the DVLA , so I doubt you can appeal it , the fine is high to deter people from committing the offence.
Slightly off subject , no tax discs mean that local residents can't tell if an old wreck has been abandoned and get them removed as easily.0 -
The argument about abolishing VED and adding to fuel is an interesting one.
Assuming that the amount added to fuel is equivalent to the revenue lost / litres sold per annum then the net effect should be zero. The hauliers and high mileage or ineconomic road users will lose and the low mileage or economic will win. I would imagine that the majority of the high mileage users are businesses so they will have the added effect of a tax deduction on the difference. The cost passed onto the end consumer in the form of increased prices should offset the saving on VED.
The problem with change is that there are always winners and losers and ministers do not have the balls to make the decision so they simply leave it.0 -

You can always take your smartphone with you on your regular neighbourhood patrols.
Lol Most of the old dears who clock the numbers whilst banging into them with their shopping trolleys ( like my previous neighbour) don't have smart phones or the internet , pen and paper and a landline.:rotfl:0
