Enormous fine for untaxed vehicle

I know it was my fault for completely having forgotten to tax my car! But I've been fined £362 for it. (Plus to pay the tax)
I feel like the crime doesn't meet the punishment, it's far too much than what I can afford.
Do I have any options?

    If you really can't afford to pay it, see if you can pay on the drip.

    How is that fine calculated? Is it all a fine, or is some of it a fee for having a clamp removed, or getting the car released after being towed?

    I'm sorry you can't afford it - but isn't the whole point of a financial penalty to dissuade people from committing the offence in the first place?

    Wonder why they don't have a little disc of paper type of thing that you could stick on your windscreen to remind you of expiry date.

    I wonder why they don't send a reminder to the registered keeper that it needs renewing, or offer a direct debit that won't expire and will automatically renew...

    I still get reminders and others I know do too.

    How soon before do you get the reminder?

    My car was taxed by the garage and I'm not sure when it runs out. Not till Feb / march but is there a database I can check or something?
